Suicides & Euthanasia In Trinidad & Tobago

I was reading a report in the Express today that stated that Trinidad and Tobago is second on suicides in the Caribbean region. What do you think is the reason for such high levels of suicide in the nation?

international QUOTE
CONSULTANT psychiatrist attached to the University of the West Indies, Dr Hari Maharajh, has criticised health authorities for failing to provide training in advanced psychiatry at the St Ann's Hospital, although Trinidad and Tobago has the second highest rate of suicide in the Caribbean.

Maharajh said the World Health Organisation, in a report, stated that the rate of suicide in Trinidad was 11.6 per 100,000, and this is only exceeded by Cuba. He said "Suicides continue to take place in areas like Penal, Barrackpore and Caroni".

Lovers' quarrels are the commonest cause of suicide, while peer pressure accounts for a small number, he added.

Maharajh said many of the suicides could have been avoided if the Ministry of Health had a programme to deal with the problem.

"The failure by the ministry to provide advanced training in psychiatry is a contributing factor to the high rate of suicides in the country," said Maharajh.

He added, "At St Ann's Hospital there is no training in consultation psychiatry, despite attempts made to establish a consultation service with Port of Spain General Hospital."

A former medical chief of staff at St Ann's, Maharajh said these services are currently provided by junior doctors with inadequate training....

I think the best people to ask that are all those Trinis who log on from abroad saying how great a place Trinidad is to live. Let's get their take on things. Or maybe we can have one of the locals (Kaisofan).

Could it be that Trinis keep a lot to themselves and they are not able to express their deepest pains and sorrows? What I do find extremely sad is to see the cases of kids trying to commit suicide or those who actually done it.

In Trinidad and Tobago and in other parts of the world, the suicide rate among men is several times higher than for women, so much so that suicide is listed as one of six major health concerns among men in this country. It is supported by statistics—of the 74 suicides that were reported for the period January-August 2020, 59 men ended their lives compared to 15 women. Source 7l.

I agree with the point about many keeping their stress to themselves. Trinis have a way to make a joke out of something when it is not their problem so why should they want to reveal what they are going through only to be the next joke by the rest of the gang on the block.
