What is Genealogy?

GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH

Ever had an interest in where you came from, who was your grandmother or why your name is what it is? Then you just may be interested in genealogy. Basically genealogical research involves tracing your ancestors using documents, live accounts and records so that you build what is called, 'A pedigree tree'.

As this board grows you will have the ability to interact with others who are also interested in their family history. An example of how big this can get is to view my own genealogy site at: Borde Genealogy

If you are interested in researching a particular name please start your message with the subject as the NAME of the person you are researching. This helps in wading through hundreds of threads. Please be specific in the body of your post with such thigs as dates, names, location, etc. Remember the same name might be located in different countries. Here is an example:

Subject: Bordes in Trinidad
Message: I am looking for Edgar Hypolite Borde's burial plot in Trinidad. He passed away on the 4th October, 1976.

Q. What is Genealogy Research?

Genealogy begins when you ask, 'who is my mother and who is my father?' The first step you should take is to sit down with your own mother and father and get the following information (You may print it if you like):

First Name: Middle Name(S):
Maiden Name: Surname:
Date of Birth:Where:
Date of Christening:Where:
Spouse: Spouse Maiden Name:
Date of Marriage:Where:
Date of Death:Where:
Date of Burial:Where:
Children:

There are more questions you can ask, but the above is the core inormation that you will need for each individual with name, date of birth, marriage, and date of death being the most important.

Q. What is the big deal with Genealogy anyway?

Besides the natural urge to find out 'where' we came from there is a spiritual aspect as well. Many refer to the scriptures to find purpose and meaning to their ancestral research.

Religious Views Of Genealogy

One of the oldest Genealogical records in the world, the Bible, records the importance of 'order' in the family through the patriarchs as well as this verse in:

international QUOTE
Malachi 4:6, it says, "And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse."

One religious movement called, 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' (Most people know them as 'Mormons') does have a firm belief that those who die physically, live on and expect to be united to their families. The action of being united comes through doing Family History (Genealogy research) and then submitting the names and dates they have found to their Temples for certain ordinances to be done by proxy on behalf of the deceased that seal the family together. Tribes and nations often use Genealogy to ascertain who should be their leader or wise-man.

Genealogy What

Sometimes genealogy can establish boundaries and family ties in legal disputes. You can never know when it may come in handy so everyone should both know how to do their own pedigree as well as have it as part of their records.

I wish I could get more co-operation from my relatives on some of the places and dates. They always promise they will "Look for the information" And then a couple months after when I remind them they claim to have forgotten about it or some other excuse.

Sometimes you have to nag them more often. It depends on how badly you want the information maybe to the point of annoying them until they give in an get the information for you.
