Well it seems that the Church has won.

The next question is... where are the antis going to protest now?
I like when we are able to update / follow-up with threads like this one, especially when the ending turns out to be positive. Well here is a plus for the Church!
PLAZA SUIT IS DISMISSED
A federal judge rejected the American Civil Liberties Union's religious conspiracy claims Monday, ruling that Salt Lake City didn't violate the Constitution by trading away public access on the LDS Church's Main Street Plaza.

OFTEN-NOISY S.L. PLAZA FIGHT ENDS QUIETLY AFTER 7 YEARS
About seven years ago, Stuart Reid hatched a plan to sell part of Main Street to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was the blocklong stretch of Main from South to North Temple streets.

The Church announced recently that will spend the exorbitant sum of 1 billion US dollars in a makeover of a shopping mall in downtown Salt Lake City. Pres. Hinckley assured the members that no tithing money will be used for this project. The question I have is: How this mall is going to benefit the poor and the afflicted? I know the Church is doing great in humanitary efforts but I see no purpose in spending so much money just for a mall. What's your take?
I hadn't heard anything about it. I can't understand why the Church would be at all involved in any commercial enterprise. Even ZCMI, in its beginning, was not a commercial enterprise, but a part of the United Order.
I would have to assume that it is part of the efforts to bolster the "image" of the Church. In my opinion, if the Church has that much money lying around, it should be used for other things, including expanding the Welfare Program instead of the Bishops telling people who need the help that they must go to their families first, then go to the State, THEN they can approach the Church.
Nighthawk, here a link of the project:

It will finish in 2011 and Bishop H. David Burton is in charge of it. I think is great for the people of Salt Lake City but thinking in how the *world* out there is right now, it seems like a waste of money in something that will *not* benefit a lot of people who are in *real* need.
LDS Church defends arrests at plaza
In the wake of one "kiss-in" protest carried out last Sunday and ahead of another one planned for this Sunday, the LDS Church issued a statement Friday defending its Main Street Plaza property rights and its actions involving a pair of men cited there last week for their public displays of affection.
