This is why here in most jails the officers are not armed with lethal weapons. This way the inmates can not over power a guard and use the weapon against others in an attempt to gain freedom. The officers up in the towers and outside the main perimeter do carry weapons. The have rifles usually with scopes that allow them to pick off any aggressive inmates.
