Ebony Introduction

Greetings,

My name is Ebony and I am a roleplayer going on six years now, mostly dedicating my time to a game called Renaissance Kingdoms.

I am interested in heraldry and have studied a little of the rules of Coats of Arms, but as that is an extremely complicated art, with varying rules depending on who and where you are, well I haven't learnt much of what there is to learn really.

While I still give a lot of my time to RK, it is becoming more and more difficult to find active players who are willing to get involved in roleplays that don't involve silly tea parties and who don't conduct their characters as if they are better than the few players lucky enough to be granted peerage by the powers that be. As such, I am branching out a little and seeing what other options there are for good text based roleplay.

Heya, there, and welcome to the community. Although I think there are some "straight" roleplays like I think you might be referring to, I think a good majority (though not all) here use at least a very basic "system", so you will have to make sure to read the different RP's overviews if you're not looking for "game" type RP activities.

For player-run PbP RPGs, I strongly recommend you look through this Newcomer FAQ I wrote, it will answer a lot of questions, I hope, so you can more easily get into the games if those are your interest. D&D Newcomer F.A.Q.

Besides the official site RPGs here, which need 75% activity level (which isn't hard to get if you post a couple times a day or so), there are other (maybe more the works) player run pbp forum games in progress, so stop by and check them out). I trust your settle-in will be smooth and pleasant.

Welcome to the forums fellow RPGer. We have some nice D&D games going right now if you are interested in joining them. We do not drink much tea that I know of but our characters can put down a few ales here and there.

Introduction Ebony

So I went on a bit of a wander through the forum and I came across some threads where a GM wrote something like

"You find an orchard growing apples, what will you do"

A player the responded with

"I will take a bucket and pick apples"

Is this the type of RP here? Choose your own adventure style RP, responding to questions posed by a GM?.
Do you have any RPs that don't have GMs?

The Kind of RPs I'm used to are generally written third person and you describe every tiny bit of a scene/action involving your character.

eg. The opening posts of a thread which will evolve "hopefully (nothings guaranteed)" into a story about a woman returning from abroad to find she has been betrayed by a family member which will then evolve into a split between two halves of a great family with the resources each to start a war.

The only problem is that half the people who were going to be part of this one, have left the game because they couldn't stand the nastiness that comes from the other side of the game which is all mines and gold and markets and money making.

international QUOTE
Conveyor:
The party of five rode as silent as was possible. The hooves of their steeds had been wrapped in cloth and their tack had been stripped down to diminish the possibility of jangling steel.
Four of them were battle hardened soldiers, former men at arms of a Duke long since passed, leaving his troops without employ.
Instead they travelled as mercenaries, available for hire to any who could afford them.
This night, they were bound as usual by the gold in their purses and the promise of more.
They rode in formation, two in front and two at rear, between them rode the fifth of their party, cloaked and hooded, her name unknown even to their employer.

Ebony: Ebony kept her head down, the cloth of her hood making it difficult to see very far ahead. Fortunately sight was not necessary, her horse was guided by her guards and her only task was too see that no harm befell the cargo she carried in her lap.
The night wore on and Ebony grew tired. She had not been able to escape her duties that day. As maid servant she had been expected to work from dawn until dusk from the day she was old enough to hold a broom.
As a child born into this life, she held in her heart a certain loyalty to her household. Yet now she rode on a betrayer's mission, stealing from her Mistress something so precious that her own life could not be enough to repay the debt.

Zenrel: In the North, Zenrel sat and stared into yet another empty mug. Another hoard of soldiers and farmers had drunk their fill and left her alone. Whispers had turned to loudly spoken jibes.
"The woman is mad, she hasn't left the tavern in days" "She's a spy, Scottish by the look of her, but I've heard it said she speaks with the tongue of the English" "Poor thing, looks as though she might have been somebody once"
On the occasions Zenrel bothered to join in the conversations, she was met with questions that she often could not answer. Her reasons for being there and her refusal to accept a place in the armies of either side.

Jakob: As the hooded man sat on the large rock, while the silent rain fell about him in the pale moonlight, he spotted the small party approaching him. He knew what approached him, it was something he had been waiting for... For a long time.

As the man stood, and walked in the road in the path of the party, his boots trudging against the wet mud that the falling rain had produced. He saw as the accompanying men suddenly were aware of his presence, and swords flashed into their hands. The man stood still, he had no fear of weapons, he had seen enough of them... This was a war-torn land. He listened as the group finally stopped in their tracks. The man looked in each of the men's eyes, almost daring them to make a move, before a woman's hand rose to settle them from the midst of the horses.

The man watched, as the slight woman was lifted down from her saddle, and she walked towards him, with a small parcel in her hands.

His breath lost from him for a short second, the Man pulled his hood down, the rough, unshaven face now visible to the woman, he saw her hesitate for a second at the sight of him, he was a scarred man, and had the look of a one who has been through Hell and back.. He watched as she took another hesitant step towards him, before finally curtsying to him slightly, the parcel raised above her head to him.

The man slowly took the bundle from her, watching as she stepped back from him, and then looked at him with anxious, curious eyes..
His mouth a firm line, he held the bundle close and slowly pulled the cloth away...

His breath escaped him as he saw the eyes of the small child he held in his arms, he knew they were familiar to him, for they were a reflection of his own. He smiled slightly at the small child, he knew his name, the name that had been in his mind for a long time... he was named Talon. The man looked at the child once more, his voice then a slight whisper...

My son...

He nodded to the woman, who smiled eagerly, and tossed her a slight pouch filled with gold pieces. He watched as she returned to the men, who met her with anxious grins.

He turned from them, holding the small child close in his arms to protect him from the rain, before finally disappearing into the night...

Conveyor: And so the night became the devourer of a bond and the boon it had gifted unto two lovers and a young maid took the road home, carrying with her a cloth embroidered with a memory for her mistress.
A mistress who at that moment stepped foot into true England once again and in an instant knew in her heart that her child was gone.

Ebony Introduction

Good story play and it sounds interesting but I usually do not get that in depth when I am the GM of a D&D game. I let the player decide what they are going to do and then tell them what happens. Sure I have a story line that I hope they follow but I am flexible enough to change gears as the party does or goes somewhere totally unexpected. I do not know if there is any RPG on this site that does not have a GM controlling the chaos that can or may happen withing the RPG.

That was written by three different players.
The "Conveyor" role was played by one of them using the game's "mask" feature.

Stories evolve in any number of ways as each writer brings his own ideas. You have no idea what the next player will do or say until they have posted it.
While a group of players may say "lets have an RP about apples" there is a very good chance you will end up eating fish instead.

Perhaps this is not the right place for me, I have no experience with D&D nor with GMs in general. Free RP is what I am after.

Hi Ebony! You'll find stories like that in the Member Wars board. Here is one thread as an example: Source 8 that is mostly a comedy built around a medieval tavern. We also have modern day story role-plays but you can also start your own and others may join in.
