B Y U

Why do people go to BUY? The second reason is because of religion, want to know what is the first?

international QUOTE
WHY ATTEND THE Y.?

Why the Y.? Recent large surveys of alumni and students show the No. 1 reason
They come to BYU is for a good education. Religion is second, followed by Reasonable cost and preparation for a career. Ref. Source

Mormons and BYU

I went to BYU when I was 34 years old.  I started my first semester there five months after the birth of my sixth child.  While I had about a year's worth of general education done (mostly while serving in the USAF), I faced 3 ½ years worth of manufacturing and engineering courses.

I could have gone to Utah State, the University of Utah, or UVSC and it would have cost much less.  While I didn't know that the manufacturing program was so good at BYU, I originally applied to be in the Computer Science program, and I know that University of Utah has at least as good a CS program as BYU.

When I applied to go to BYU, we were living on the border of Minnesota and North Dakota.  I could have easily gone to any of the excellent universities there, and saved all the money it took to move our family out to Utah.

Anyway, I chose BYU because of the religious aspects.  I wanted the chance to attend good, full depth religion classes, including the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants, which I did.

Overall, the experience was very good.  My children did well there, as did my wife.  I had a good GPA, had two semesters of Book of Mormon, a semester of the D&C, and a semester of the New Testament.  I really couldn't fit any more than that in, as I finished about 3 ½ years worth of work into 2 ½ years.

We also all fell in love with the mountains (well, I didn't, as I grew up in the mountains of SE Idaho so it was just moving back home for me).  My wife, who is from England, has lived in Wales.  While everyone says that Wales is mountainous, I consider Snowdonia just foothills compared to the Rockies.

My wife and children all got a chance to experience Mormon culture firsthand.  Some of it was good, some bad.  But it was very nice to be able to go into the university bookstore and buy scriptures and church books.  Also, how many other engineering schools have baby changing tables in the men's rest rooms?

Speaking of which, I was able to take my infant to class with me when my wife had something going on.  I took all of my children, at one time or other, to class or to a lab.

The last year I was there, I taught basic manufacturing technologies (welding, casting, milling and turning) to Mechanical Engineering students.  My four older children each attended at least a couple of the classes.  They each got to help pour their own miniature aluminum anvil, which was part of the casting class.

I guess that I am trying to say that the whole cultural experience of the school is what I took away from it.

BLACKS SAY THEY FACE SOME BIAS AT BYU

This is both so bad for BYU and the name of the Church. Of course, as Pres. Hinckley talked about - STOP WATCHING THE PORN!

4 FORMER Y. PLAYERS INDICTED IN SCANDAL

A state grand jury has indicted four former Brigham Young University football players on allegations of gang rape, capping an especially embarrassing year for a football program long considered a missionary tool for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I got very upset when I found out that these players are now free because they pay bail, when they already have at least one confession admiting the crime...I think in rapes bail SHOULD NOT be an option....it's a shame....

From Salt Lake Tribune:

Three former Brigham Young University football players accused of gang-raping a 17-year-old girl have posted bail and been released from jail.
Defendant Ibrahim Rashada, 18, was freed Wednesday with financial help from two strangers who learned about his case and his lack of funds from newspaper stories, according to his defense team.
Defendants Karland Bennett, 19, and B.J. Mathis, 18, posted bail earlier and were released Tuesday, the same day a 4th District Court judge lowered bail for the three defendants from $100,000 to $50,000.
The players' quest for freedom was aided by a bail bond company that lowered its normal 10 percent cash requirement. The bond company demanded only $3,000 from each player.
Meanwhile, prosecutors delivered the bulk of their case to defense attorneys. Judge Steven Hansen on Tuesday ordered prosecutors to work "around the clock" to copy documents and taped interviews, so the defense could be ready for a Jan. 3 trial...
