Title: Dwayne Gibbs
Comments: I honestly think Mr. Gibbs is doing a good job. The problem is that his hands are tied by the current legislations for his job position. What needs to be done, in my opinion, is a total clean sweep of the entire police force from the ground up to the top levels. Mr. Gibbs needs to bring in foreign police officers (Canadian or USA) and have a 'mentoring' system - at LEAST one foreign police to one TT police officer, and in this way, TT officers will 'learn' to take the hard stance that foreign officers take for granted.
How many times have you driven by 4 or 5 officers standing on the street, chatting away with each other while traffic was at an almost standstill, and some fool is trying to cut everyone off - why can't one or two of them help out by directing traffic? I have seen vagrants badgering people for cash while police just stand there and watch.
The current TT force is viewed by the public (justly or not) as lazy, uncaring, and corrupt, really a joke of what a police officer should be, and nothing will truly change this perception without some drastic measures. They need to be 'taken by the hand' by a foreign police force who will be less tolerant of the crimes committed from speeding, selling bootleg DVD's on every corner, to theft, r-pe, and murder. Once the public realizes that the police actually mean business then attitudes will change.
T&T is about the size of a large north american city, ie. Ottawa, and has approximately the same population. Ottawa sees approximately 7 murders a year. In fact, Canada's homicide rate for 2010 was 1.62 per 100,000 people, and T&T was 37 per 100,000!
You may say it's because we are a third world country, because even Haiti, Ethiopia, and Cuba fall well below T&T in the homicide rates. What do these countries all have in common? The police mean business and criminals tend to be prosecuted for their crimes!
So no matter who is the COP, Dwayne Gibbs or a local person, the fact remains that both the police themselves need to improve their image as well as get tougher on ALL crime, and the public must learn to respect the police, criminals must learn to fear them, and innocent people must learn to trust the system.
Just my opinion, of course!

How can you board a plane to a country and not know if you have permission to land there? I thought any cop would automatically have that figured out or is it that north Americans just feel they can enter anywhere they like?
IndianChick, for what I read he said it was a last minute thing so he just took his Canadian passport and when he landed he realized he needed a visa. I think he thought he would be treated different because of his position but let me tell you the Brazilians didn't care one bit and I don't see why they should.
Why are people so upset with Gibbs if he didn't leave the country for seven days? I thought it was bad of the Police Commission to embarrass him like that in public with those statements.

Comments: I'm surprised at some of the replies. Mr. Gibbs is a gentleman and all he does is try his very best to work for the benefit of the citizens of Trinidad & Tobago. I'm appalled at the lack of respect towards him.

Comments: CanadianG let me tell you this has nothing to do with respect. Mr. Gibbs is getting a ridiculously huge salary from all tax payers therefore people has a right to question what he does during his working hours.
I would also like to add that appointing Mr. Williams as an Acting Commissioner seems to be a move that for me means that Mr. Gibbs contract will probably be terminated sometime soon. The thing is, if Williams wasn't ready a year ago...what makes him ready now?
