I saw the movie a couple of months ago. It wasn't as bad as some have said. I think some of the negative reviews of the movie have come because it didn't have the special effects of a big hollywood production, or the money backing it that "the Passion of the Christ" did. That being said, I thought it was pretty good and made me yearn to see what the next installments will be like. It essentially goes from the beginning of the BOM to when the Nephites and Lamanites splinter off from each other in the new world. (I'd give you the appoximate chapter, but I don't have the BOM in front of me right now.) My main problem with the movie was that we weren't able to see it in a normal movie theatre and the place we saw it had terrible sound and it was cold in there. I mean, you could have stored dead bodies in the theatre. I found out a couple of days after we saw it that I could have driven about 15 more miles and seen it in a regular theatre for the same price. Ohh well...
I do plan on getting the movie on DVD when it comes out and like I said, I am looking forward to seeing how they treat the upcoming installments. It was also surprisingly funny in parts. Considering what passes for entertainment at the movie theatre now days, it was good to see a movie that was uplifting, even if it didn't have a multi-million dollar effect budget.
just my .02
It's as doctrinally accurate as it can be considering that it's taking a monumental subject and boiling it down into a two hour movie. Even though this is only the first installment of something like 11 episodes and only covers (essentially) 1st Nephi, I would think that it was quite a difficult undertaking to make it as doctrinally accurate as it is.
Put it this way, if someone hadn't read the Book of Mormon, I wouldn't say go see the movie and you'll be converted. Only the book itself can do that! But I was impressed that they got it as accurate as they did. Speaking of that, I know that at least here in California, you could bring investigators to the movie and they got in free, which partially goes to explaining why we had so many missionaries in our screening.
As for the humor, the way that Laman and Lemuel's murmuring was handled got to be funny. And when you read the BOM, their murmuring can also be funny as well as being sad. But when they see so many miracles and still murmur, well, it can be humorous. It allowed some levity into what can be a ponderously serious subject. One other moment that was humourous. Nephi makes a second comment to Lehi about how he would be more than willing to 'do the thing which his father commanded' since it involved going back to get Ishmael and especially Ishmael's daughters! Something like that...it showed that Nephi wanted some female companionship. Nephi's response certainly generated some loud laughter during our screening of the movie.
BTW, the movie ends at 2nd Nephi Chapter 5.

I thought that Laman and Lemuel would be the funny part of the movie, after all, when you read the Book of Mormon you cannot help yourself in wondering what's wrong with these people?. Thanks for the review Big Mac, I wish I could be living there so I can get to see this movie. What about the acting? is it good?
I never saw the BOM movie, but I do love the other church movies. I think that the Single's Ward is awesome and my roommate loved Pride and Prejudice, although I haven't seen it yet. I'm looking forward to seeing that one when it comes out on video, and I'll probably check out the BOM movie when it comes out too.
I've seen just about every movie that has come out in the last few years with a Mormon theme except for Latter Days. It's about a missionary who gets seduced by a gay man and is sent home from his mission. All the anti-mormons are applauding it which is a good reason to stay away.
I enjoyed God's Army, The Other Side of Heaven, Singles Ward, The RM and the full length movie, Johnny Lingo. I don't know how many here were teenagers taking Seminary from the late 1960's to about the mid 1980's, but if you were, you will remember the filmstrip series, Tom Trails. As far as I know, there is no movie being planned, but someone has resurrected the entire series and you can down load it from a web site. Go to:

I've seen The Other Side of Heaven, Charly and The Singles Ward and a movie starring the guy from God's Army called Brigham City, but I haven't actually seen God's Army. Brigham City was a real strange movie if you haven't seen it yet. It's an LDS mystery/thriller, yes, you heard me right mystery/thriller. About this cop in Brigham City, Utah who is a Bishop in his Church life and hunting a serial killer in his cop life. A strangely enjoyable movie starring the guy from God's Army.
LDS_forever: Yeah the acting is good. It's not going to win any Academy Awards, but since it's a movie about a subject so near and dear to our hearts, it is sometimes easier to overlook some of the movies' flaws simply because it is a movie about the Book of Mormon. A friend of mine was pointing that out to me the other day. That based on Hollywood standards, the BOM movie is cheesy. I then pointed out to him that while that may be true, and while it may not have someone with the cash of Mel Gibson to bankroll the budget behind it like passion of the christ did, there is one thing that weighs heavily in the BOM movies favor. About a week ago, I found out that a friend of mine in high school who knew that me and some of our other friends were mormons, but wasn't a mormon or interested in the church, (and who I had lost contact with for about 20 years) at the last moment decided to go down and check out the BOM movie. He was so touched by what he saw, "cheesy dialogue and cheap special effects" notwithstanding, that he invited the missionaries over to his house, started reading the Book of Mormon and I guess you can fill in the rest of the story...
he is scheduled for baptism in two weeks.
that is the power of that book and testimony inside of it and why it is important that the movie was made and should continue to be made.
I can't tell you how happy it made me to get that telephone call from him.
