The Other Side of Heaven

What did you think about the film? I thought it was well made, but would only be appreciated by members of the Church and more so those that served missions with their heart. What is your review?

My review....as a member of the LDS Church I LOVED the movie and it made me want (one more time) to go and get some drama lessons. I love acting, I think it's awesome but let me get to the movie. I think as you well said JB the movie is great for LDS members or those who read the Book 'In the eye of the storm' by John Groberg or those who know him.
The movie lacks a lot of character development and the 'problems' on the movie are easily solved and too quick in my opinion. Elder Groberg's companion seemed to be a follower rather than the one directing Groberg's path on the new life on the island. I mean we know it's a low budget movie but I think they did a great job. I would recommend this movie to any family.

One thing I thought could give off signals to natives and other non-white folk is the need for this man to come all the way from Utah to 'teach' the people. I am somewhat concerned about the way the Church sometimes portrays itself, especially living on an island where the government and most citizens view the Church as a 'white man's' church and why locals do not play a bigger role.

The main actor did portray well the 'goofy greenie' side of early missionary life. I felt sorry for the companion who must of been thinking... 'why am I stuck with this guy?' (just kidding)

Well, I agree with you JB, that's why The Other Side of Heaven' is not a LDS movie but about LDS characters

Good point, but then members use it as if it is a Church video, that is a mistake I think.

Oh yes definetly, people see a movie about a LDS and they are quick to make it an LDS movie but they will stop doing that just now because the LDS film have grown so much that they're now doing all kind of movies like the one about a gay missionary on the field :

LDS film, or did you mean LDS related film? I can't imagine the Church wanting to create a movie about a gay missionary.

True, but this is a problem for nearly every US missionary serving a mission outside of the US. I know I felt that by non-members of the church when I served in England, and every other missionary I know who served non-US missions felt it too. A group of about 10 of us (my old Aaronic Priesthood quorums) got together one night and discussed our missions amongst ourselves and it was one of the things that those who served non-US missions had in common. I would imagine that those who are from Utah, probably come across that same prejudice even serving stateside missions.

And I would take a guess that all white missionaries, regardless of what religion they proselytize, have come across that problem when serving in a mission with people of a different skin color. People who are challenged by the message being preached are always going to attack it with the most rudimentary of arguments at first, and it makes sense to me that arguments of race would be among the first to arise.

I can also see where even some members of any religion might feel the same about foreign members of that religion proselytizing in their country. However, if their faith is strong and they truly understand the purpose of why those people are serving the missions, then it is not a concern. Only if though, that those serving don't serve with an air of superiority.
