Police identify body found Friday in St. Johns River near downtown Jacksonville

Jacksonville police have identified the remains of a man found Friday floating in the St. Johns River off the North Florida Shipyards at 2060 E. Adams St. as Calvin Bailey, 45, of La Marche Drive.
Police were sent to the site under the Hart Bridge just before 4:45 p.m. after a boater spotted an unknown object floating in the river and realized it was a body according to police. Boats from the fire department and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission pulled the body from the water.

Jacksonville cracks down on Occupy protesters

The city is cracking down on Occupy Jacksonville supporters who have gathered in front of City Hall night and day since Nov. 5.
A letter Thursday from Howard M. Maltz, the city?s deputy general counsel, gives the group until Tuesday to remove signs on public property as well as items stored along Duval Street.
The letter, which said the group was in violation of city codes, was not precipitated by any one thing, said Cindy Laquidara, the city?s general counsel. There was a sense, however, that the group was escalating its lack of compliance, she said.

Middleburg woman passes out at the wheel; daughter steers car

A daughter had to steer her mom's car to safety after the 59-year-old passed out on Blanding Boulevard early Tuesday in Clay County.
Margaret Prim of Middleburg was driving the Hyundai Sonata south of County Road 218 about 6:30 a.m. when she became unresponsive, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Her 19-year-old daughter, Michelle Prim, took the wheel and guided the car to a driveway.
Her mother was taken to Orange Park Medical Center where she died of natural causes, the Highway Patrol said.

Jacksonville police and rescue vehicle crash

A Jacksonville fire-rescue truck hit an undercover Sheriff's Office car this afternoon at Beaver and Davis streets near Lavilla School of the Arts.
It happened about 3:30 p.m. and required rescue crews to remove the top off the police vehicle, an unmarked Chevrolet Impala, to free the two officers.
Several officials are at the scene. Injuries have not been reported yet, but the Times-Union is at the scene and will update the story as information becomes available.

Brien Alvezios was killed Nov. 26 as he biked on Branan Field Road.

Two Operation Sheepdog suspects convicted and sentenced on child sexual predator charges in St. Johns County

A 30-year-old Waycross, Ga. man was sentenced to 25 years in prison and five years of probation as a sex offender after a St. Johns County jury found him guilty last month of use of a computer to solicit a parent and traveling to meet a minor after using a computer to solicit a parent, according to the State Attorney?s Office in St. Johns County.
Christopher Lee Smith was sentenced Tuesday by Circuit Judge Wendy Berger. He was found not guilty on charges of attempted sexual battery on someone less than 12 and transmission of harmful material to minors.

One arrested, four more sought in theft from Jacksonville non-profit

Jacksonville police have arrested one person, and are seeking four more in the theft of more than $77,000 from the non-for-profit Community Rehabilitation Center, which offers mental health, substance abuse, and housing assistance in Northeast Florida.
Police already booked Sauna Hicks, 46, on charges of organized fraud and bank fraud at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and she remains in the Duval County jail on $300,000 bail, according to jail records.
