Pair sentenced in state prison kickback scheme

A federal judge has sentenced Gainesville businessman Edward Lee Dugger to 26 months in federal prison, and former co-worker Joseph Arthur Deese to 14 months for a conspiracy to pay approximately $130,000 in kickbacks to high-ranking Florida Department of Corrections officials.
The Friday sentencing also ordered Dugger and Deese, who had pleaded guilty last year, to jointly forfeit $232,019.11, according to the U.S. Attorney?s Office.

Pre-dawn accident kills man on Mayport Road

A 69-year-old Jacksonville Beach man was hit and killed early Friday morning in the 2200 block of Mayport Road at Fleet Landing Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The man walked in front of a northbound 2003 Jeep Cherokee at 2:15 a.m., according to Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper. The Jeep was driven by James Edward Gray, 31, of Jacksonville.
The victim won?t be identified until next of kin are notified, Leeper said. No charges were filed since the pedestrian was at fault, Leeper said.

Racing deputies red flagged in Putnam County following accident

An apparent case of ?Go Speed Racer Go!? has two Putnam County Sheriff?s deputies gone from their department after they raced at almost three times the posted 45-mph speed limit on Florida 20 in response to a Dec. 31 noise complaint in Hollister, according to the Sheriff?s Office.
Deputies Terry Krueger, a 6-year-veteran, and Thomas Burger, on the job for less than a year, were both fired from the Sheriff?s Office on Friday after an investigation into the 2:30 a.m. incident, which ended with one cruiser crashing.

One of two brothers charged with murder in a September 2008 shooting of a 26-year-old at an Arlington apartment complex was found guilty Friday.
Winston Leo Murphy, 29, was charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in the slaying of Timothy Javon Jones, shot multiple times as while visiting a tenant at Justina Terrace Apartments to buy marijuana. Murphy faces the possibility spending the rest of his life in prison.

Samuel Thompson lashed out at Jarred Harrell, telling Harrell he was glad he would spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his 7-year-old sister in October 2009. As Harrell left the Clay County courtroom, Samuel, 9, yelled out, ?Have a fun time.?
