Police said an argument over a pit bull ended in the stabbing death of a 25-year-old Jacksonville man Saturday at a Southside apartment complex.As police were responding to the Avesta Baymeadows apartments on Old Baymeadows Road, where stabbing victim Joseph Micah Premo was being helped by rescue workers, a man matching the description of the assailant was seen leaving in a taxi, Lt. Rob Schoonover said Tuesday.

Checkers Restaurant Chain Operator In Jacksonville Charged With Sales Tax Theft

A fast-food chain operator in Northeast Florida has been charged with the theft of at least $330,000 in sales taxes owed to the state and collected in 2010 and 2011.Mark Williams, 48, the chief operating officer of Jaxchex, which operates nine Checker?s restaurants in Duval, Clay, St. Johns and Flagler counties, was arrested Thursday and released on bail, according to the Florida Department of Revenue.Investigators said taxes collected from all the restaurants during parts of the two years were not sent to the state.

Bald Eagle Shot Recovering In St. Johns Veterinary Hospital

ST. AUGUSTINE | A protected American bald eagle found shot by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers was brought back from the brink of death by St. Johns Veterinary Hospital staff this week.The bird was found Sept. 4 by Fish and Wildlife officers and brought to a local animal emergency room before being sent to St. Johns Veterinary, said Kathleen Deckard of the hospital.She said the male eagle was weak, dehydrated and not alert.?We won?t know until next week if the buckshot will cause lead toxicity,? Deckard said.

State Investigating Whether Angela Corey Illegally Fired Zimmeman Witness

The Florida Commission on Human Relations has launched a whistleblower investigation to determine whether the former information technology director for State Attorney Angela Corey was fired illegally.Ben Kruidbos was fired in June after he testified that prosecutors did not turn over all information to George Zimmerman?s defense team in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Kruidbos claims he was a whistleblower, and under the law cannot be fired.He also has filed a suit against Corey asking for $5 million or more in damages and his job back.

Jacksonville Police Search For Dollar General Robbers

Two men with guns and bandanas robbed the 9156 103rd St. Dollar General Store Sunday night in Jacksonville.They came into the store about 9:35 p.m. ordering everyone to get on the floor face down, the Sheriff?s Office said. A witness said one of them pointed a handgun at her face demanded money. When they left the store, they were westbound on 103rd Street. Investigators also said a gray van with a female driver may have been involved.

Putnam Sheriffs Office: Major Cocaine Distributor Locked Up

A man the Putnam County Sheriff?s Office deems a major cocaine distributor was arrested in Hawthorne Thursday as part of a long-term undercover investigation.Cleophus Tyrone Matthews, 34, of Johnson was charged with cocaine trafficking, according to the county jail log. He was being held on $50,000 bail.Matthews was considered a significant supplier of cocaine in West Putnam, the Sheriff?s Office said.

Chairman Of Civic Council Charged With DUI By Jacksonville Police

The chairman of the Jacksonville Civic Council looking into the city?s pension issues was arrested and charged with drunk driving Thursday after an officer saw him weaving on Hendricks Avenue.Steven Thomas Halverson, president and CEO of The Haskell Co., was stopped about 11:45 p.m. after the officer said he observed the black 2013 Tesla weaving and saw another motorist hit their brakes presumably to avoid a collision, the arrest report said.

Jacksonville Police: Asian-style Restaurants Targeted By Crooks

Jacksonville police are investigating a recent series of burglaries to Asian-style restaurants.Six burglaries have occurred since Sept. 20 to restaurants in the Arlington/Regency, Baymeadows Road and North Main Street areas, the Sheriff?s Office said. All occurred at night or early morning.
