Trial Date Set For Donald Smith In 8-year-old Cherishs Perrywinklles Abduction Death

A trial date was set Tuesday morning for the Jacksonville man accused of the sexual assault and strangulation of 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle.Cherish was lured away from her mother with promises of buying her clothes with a gift card June 21 at a Lem Turner Road Walmart. She was found the next morning dumped in a wooded area near a church.Police quickly identified Donald James Smith, a 57-year-old sex offender, as a suspect and located his van a short time later and arrested him. He is charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual battery.

Jacksonville Man Facing Life After Conviction In Robbery Slaying

Three people have now been convicted in a 2011 drug buy robbery killing at Grassy Ponds apartments on Jacksonville?s Westside.A Jacksonville jury convicted Elliott De?Jhavon Barnett, 22, Thursday of first-degree murder for his role in 34-year-old William Rene McFaline?s death, according to the State Attorney?s Office.Barnett, who also was convicted of attempted armed robbery, was sentenced to life in prison.

Jacksonville Man Shot Walking Monday Night

A shooting victim who told Jacksonville police he was wounded while walking in the 200 block of West 48th Street was taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries.The victim told police that about 11:30 p.m. Monday a dark car drove by and moments later he was shot in his lower extremities. Clay County Man Critical After Thursday Accident In Columbia County

A 66-year-old Fleming Island man was critically injured Thursday afternoon after an accident involving two pickup trucks on Florida 247 in Columbia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.Ernest J. Hall was driving his 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck east at 2:50 p.m. when he made a left turn in front of 75-year-old Lake City resident Claude Norris? 2002 Ford F-150 pickup, according to the Highway Patrol. Norris? pickup hit Hall?s right rear side, then both ended up on the north shoulder, investigators said.

Woman Arrested In June Traffic Fatality Was Travelling 76 Mph And Weaving On Roosevelt Boulevard

Police said a Jacksonville woman has been charged with vehicular homicide and was traveling 76 mph when she hit the Michael Goodbread Jr.?s Volvo, killing him as he drove onto Roosevelt Boulevard on his way to work.Tamara Larissa Miller, 44, was arrested Tuesday. She was charged based on the speed.?Detectives were able to determine her speed was calculated at 76 miles per hour at impact,? police spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda said.Witnesses told police they saw Miller weaving, driving at a high rate of speed and that she ran the red light at Roosevelt and Verona Avenue.

Former Jacksonville Corrections Officer Charged With Possessing Child Porn

A former Jacksonville Sheriff?s Office corrections officer has been indicted on two counts of receiving child pornography and other charges, according to the U.S. Attorney?s Office.Leon Perry Brooks, Sr., 39, is also charged with one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. On the charges of receiving and distribution the pornography, Brooks faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison. On the possession of child pornography, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years? imprisonment, according to prosecutors.

Jacksonville Man Dies After Being Hit In Shootout

A 53-year-old man who was shot in a crossfire of eight to 10 gunshots Friday night has died from his injuries, according to WJXT TV-4.Police said Ahmad Miles Franklin was waiting outside for a child to return home about 7:30 p.m. when two men near Linda Drive and Kennard Street started shooting. Franklin was hit by three bullets and ran inside his home on Linda Drive. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.Sgt. Shawn Coarsey said the night of the shooting Franklin was an innocent victim and not an intended target.
