A Jacksonville insurance salesman pleaded guilty in federal court Friday to a 15-year scam in which he was charged with ripping off more than 50 people of nearly $5 million.The investments Scott Anderson Hall promised large returns on turned out to be a Ponzi scheme that he used to buy commercial property, luxury cars and other items, prosecutors said.Hall, 49, faces up to 80 years in prison, a fine of over $1 million and paying restitution to the victims involved in all 34 counts of the federal grand indictment.

Jacksonville Gun Buyback Set For Jan. 11

The Jacksonville Sheriff?s Office host its third gun buyback event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday Jan. 11, at Evangel Temple Assembly of God at 5755 Ramona Blvd.People who turn in a gun will receive $50 in cash for each weapon, funding coming from the gun buy-backs and the See It, Say It, Stop It Gun Bounty program underwritten by the Delores Barr Weaver Fund, Community Foundation of Northeast Florida and the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Foul Play Suspected In Putnam Mans Disappearance

A Putnam County man has been missing since before Christmas and may be in danger, according to the Sheriff?s Office.Members of Jose ?Anthony? Cortez?s family reported him missing Dec. 23 and haven?t heard from him since. Cortez is about 6 feet tall and weighs about 170 pounds. He has various tattoos, including a woman?s name on each arm, a joker on his left arm, a dragon tattoo on his right shoulder and tattoos on his back and chest.Cortez was last seen in the area of Sixth Way in Interlachen.Foul play is suspected, the Sheriff?s Office said.

Jacksonville Woman Who Killed Former Boyfriend Pleads Guilty

A Jacksonville woman has avoided a possible death penalty by pleading guilty to the murder of her former boyfriend.Arianne Alexys Myles. 23, pleaded guilty Thursday to the second-degree murder of 23-year-old Harold Steven Davis.Myles shot Davis outside a post office at 7055 Blanding Blvd. in March 2012. The couple had been broken up for about seven months, and Myles had just learned that Davis had proposed marriage to a new girlfriend.Prosecutors were pursuing the death penalty and had charged Myles with first-degree murder before agreeing to the plea bargain.

Jacksonville Man Hospitalized With Life-threatening Gunshot Wound

A wounded man discovered lying on the ground outside a Jacksonville mobile home park late Monday told police he was confronted by a man and woman and shot.The 28-year-old victim, whose name is not being released by the Times-Union because no arrest has been reported, was found just before 10:30 p.m. after neighbors on Nashua Drive heard a gunshot. One witness told police a man and woman were on the street asking about a tall male but did not give a name of the person they wanted to find.

Jacksonville Man Sentenced To 30 Years For Sexual Assault On 60-year-old

A Jacksonville man who forced a 60-year-old woman to have sex with him after harassing her in September 2011 was sentenced to 30 years in prison Friday, according to the State Attorney?s Office.Gabriel Wright, 51, forced his way into the victim?s home after an injunction for protection was issued, and when she tried to escape he forced her to have sex with him, the State Attorney?s Office said.

23-year-old Jacksonville Mom Charged In Death Of Infant

A Jacksonville mother has been charged with murder in the death of her infant son who police said was shaken and whose head was banged against a crib.Stephanie Renee Schoonover, 23, of the 400 block of Sago Avenue was charged Friday following the death of Logan Lee Hancock, who was just short of 3 months old when he died.The baby was taken by rescue workers to Wolfson Children?s Hospital Sept. 6 with a head injury and died two days later, according to police. Medical examiners Friday ruled the death a homicide by blunt force trauma.
