Firefighters Respond To Smoke At Jacksonville School

Jacksonville?s North Shore Elementary School was evacuated Friday afternoon after a report of smoke in the school at 5701 Silver Plaza, according to Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Tom Francis.Francis said no flames had been sighted in any classrooms after the smoke was reported some time before 3 p.m., then got a bit heavier. When firefighters used a ladder to check a rooftop air-conditioning unit, they may have sighted some flames through the smoke that were quickly extinguished, Francis said.

More Remains Excavated At Fla. Reform School Yard

Researchers say the remains of 55 people have been excavated from a graveyard at a former reform school with a history of abuse.University of South Florida researchers began surveying the graveyard at the now-closed Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna in September.On Tuesday, the researchers said they had unearthed five more bodies than they previously thought they would find. Official records indicated 31 burials at the north Florida site, but researchers had estimated there would be about 50 graves.

A 68-year-old man convicted of sexual battery on a girl who is now 15 could be sentenced to life in prison in March.Carl Gene Downer was convicted this week of sexual battery, lewd or lascivious molestation on a child younger than 12 and lewd or lascivious molestation on a child older than 12 but younger than16.In 2012 the victim said she had been attacked and an investigation found Downer had a history of touching the girl and forcing sexual acts on her, according to the State Attorney?s Office. The abuse started when the victim was 9.

A smoke alarm briefly closed the Duval County Courthouse during the second day of juror selection for the murder trial of Michael Dunn.?We did not have to evacuate the whole building,? Clerk of Court Ronnie Fussell told a Jacksonville City Council committee Tuesday. ?We contained the jurors so none of them got tainted.? Jurors in Dunn?s trial on the fatal shooting of teenager Jordan Davis were to be sequestered once they were empaneled.

St. Johns Man Wanted In October Killing Near Daytona Beach

A St. Johns County man is wanted in a Volusia County shooting death.The Sheriff?s Office there said it has a warrant for Darrell Leon Willis, 46, on charges of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.Jeriell Lesane, 28, was shot Oct. 5 outside Papi?s Bottle Club on North Nova Road near Daytona Beach, according to the Sheriff?s Office. Investigators do not think the victim was the target of the shooting.Authorities have not been able to locate Willis, whose last known address is in Elkton southwest of St. Augustine, the Sheriff?s Office said.

Two Jacksonville men have been arrested on charges of violating Florida?s litter laws after up to 1,000 pounds of lawn debris was illegally dumped in White Owl Park, a Clay County-owned site on Fleming Island, according to the Clay County Sheriff?s Office.Charles L. Yordy, 62 of Watoma Street and 39-year-old John Michael Center of West Bay Street were picked up on arrest warrants, according to the Clay County Sheriff?s Office.

State Attorney Angela Corey filed a counter claim against her former information technology director who sued her for wrongful termination, according to court documents.Ben Kruidbos testified in court that the State Attorney?s Office did not turn over all information it was able to obtain from Trayvon Martin?s cellphone in George Zimmerman?s 2013 murder trial.He was fired in June the same day prosecutors finished closing arguments in the high-profile case.
