Thieves have struck again and stolen a 3- to 4-foot stainless steel trident from a statue of Neptune in front of a home in the 3000 block of South Fletcher Avenue in Fernandina Beach, according to police.The Tuesday morning theft of the three-pronged spear from the statue of the Roman god of the sea is the third such theft at the home in recent months, according to the Fernandina Beach Police Department.

Man Charged With Intentional Cruelty After Jacksonville Police Find Limp Puppy In Hot Car

A North Carolina man was charged Sunday with animal cruelty after a severely heat-stressed puppy was taken from a car in a Jacksonville poker hall parking lot where the temperature was 90 degrees.The dog, a 3 1/2-month-old pit bull, was not expected to live and had a core body temperature of 108 degrees measured at an emergency care facility, police said.Jamar Clifton Buckley, 28, of Aberdeen arrived at the car as an officer was about to break a window to free the puppy, which appeared to be in distress. There was no water in the dog's cage that also had feces inside.

A former Marine is getting off Death Row after a Jacksonville judge ruled the death penalty phase in his original trial was marred by ineffective work by his trial lawyers.Senior Circuit Judge Charles Arnold ruled Raymond Curtis Bright, 60, should get a new penalty phase to determine if he belongs on Death Row. But the judge denied a motion from Bright?s lawyers to throw out his two first-degree murder convictions for bludgeoning Randall Brown, 16, and Derrick King III, 20, to death with a hammer.

Oak Trees Fall On Car With Woman And Child Inside

Jacksonville firefighters cut a woman and a child out from under two large oak trees that fell on a car in the 4100 block of Ruby Drive Monday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.Spokesman Tom Francis said the initial assessment of the victims indicates the wounds were not life-threatening. A dog also was in the car but wasn?t seriously injured.Francis said when the trees crashed to the ground, they also pulled power lines down creating a dangerous combination of live electrical lines and wet roads.

24-year-old Accused Of Five Points Rape Found Incompetent For Trial

The trial of a Jacksonville man accused of taking part in a 2009 gang rape in Riverside?s Five Points has been indefinitely delayed due to questions about his mental competency.Rakeem Saleem Mitchner, 24, was institutionalized this week by Circuit Judge Marianne Aho after mental-health experts examined him. He will remain in a state hospital for the next six months before having another status hearing in front of Aho.

Two friends have been charged with murder in the June beating death of a Jacksonville man who was caught with them after being chased by the victims of some chain saw thefts in Green Cove Springs.One of the captors also has been charged, but only with simple battery. The dead man, Jason Michael Kent, apparently didn?t know the chain saws had been stolen, a Sheriff?s Office report said.Nathan Charles Ross, 32, of Jacksonville and Jarrod Romani, 29, of Okeechobee were charged Monday with murder in the June 21 beating of Kent, 41 ? though Romani is still being sought.

A man who police want to interview about unwanted messages recently scrawled on Jacksonville Beach businesses has been photographed driving a white pickup that investigators want help identifying.The suspected vandal, seen driving what appears to be a white Dodge Dakota pickup away from businesses where the messages have appeared, wrote in stylized, stick-type letters, said Sgt. Tommy Crumley.Crumley said the lettering appears to spell the words ?stray off course explore,? and have been appearing on businesses for at least a week.
