A pedestrian crossing U.S. 1 in St. Augustine Monday was hospitalized in critical condition after he was struck by two drivers.Matthews Fisher Chrest, 19, was crossing from the east side of the highway at Shores Boulevard south of St. Augustine when he was hit about 9:40 p.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Mother Charged In Wounding Of 6-year-old Daughter Dispute With Boyfriend

SAVANNAH | Police have charged the mother of a 6-year-old girl who was shot during a domestic dispute just east of downtown Savannah last week with cruelty to children. The same charge has been added to two other warrants already faced by the man detectives believe shot the child.Police are still looking for 20-year-old Brandon Maurice Stewart. Stewart has been sought since detectives determined soon after the Nov. 20 incident that the child was shot during a domestic dispute between him and the girl?s mother, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.

Woman Found Shot To Death In Ditch On Jacksonvilles Westside

An unidentified woman was found shot to death Friday morning off a rural Westside Jacksonville road.Sheriff?s Office Sgt. T.K. Waters said motorists driving in the area of the 17000 block of Wells Road near Yellow Water Road spotted the body about 8:45 a.m.Police were called to the scene and are likely to remain there until late morning collecting evidence. Waters said the woman was clothed and appeared to have been in the ditch for about a day. No other details have been released.

Smoky Fire At JEA Sewage Plant Forces Precautionary Evacuation Of Nearby Stores; Hospitalizations

A Tuesday morning fire at a JEA sewage treatment plant at 10477 Bradley Road forced the evacuation of a nearby shopping center after hydrogen sulfide gas was detected in the area, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.Some workers and contractors needed medical treatment.The gas, a natural by-product of sewage treatment, posed no environmental or public safety hazard, fire department spokesman Tom Francis said. The fire was just a stubborn smoldering in the pipes that took some time to put out.

Paltaka Baby Subject Of Amber Alert Found Safe In Jacksonville With A 17-year-old Abduction Suspect

A 5-week-old baby taken from his mother in Palatka Monday has been recovered safe in Jacksonville and the suspect in the abduction is being questioned by police.Charteria Voshay Pittman, 17, of Palatka and three others with her were intercepted by investigators as they were going to meet her family, police said. She and the child?s mother are friends.Pittman and the others were apprehended in the Regency area of Jacksonville shortly after noon, said Assistant Chief James Griffith of the Palatka Police Department.

At Least Part Of I-295 Reported Closed Around Wilson Boulevard Due To Gas Leak

At least part of Interstate 295 at Wilson Boulevard was closed about 2 p.m. due to a gas leak, police and fire officials said.Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Dylan Bryan said the leak primarily affects the ramps around Wilson Boulevard.Jacksonville Fire Department spokesman Tom Francis said at 2:55 p.m. that traffic is being diverted from the Wilson Boulevard ramps away from I-295, but that the highway is still open. He also said a section of Wilson between Firestone and Old Middleburg roads is closed.
