Mom's parental rights disputed involving 12-year-old murder suspect, siblings

A gag order has been extended to the parental-rights dispute stemming from a landmark Jacksonville case in which a 12-year-old is charged as an adult with murdering his 2-year-old half brother. Cristian Fernandez is accused of killing David Galarraga after a series of beatings at the family's Southside apartment in March. Fernandez became the youngest person in Jacksonville history to face a first-degree murder charge after a grand jury indicted him June 2.

Man charged with first-degree murder for hitting victim with car

The charges against a Jacksonville Beach man charged with using his 2005 Acura as a weapon to kill a man in a parking lot have become even more serious. Adam Lloyd Shepard, 30, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder Tuesday in the January death of Spencer Schott, 35. If convicted, he would face life in prison. Shepard already was being held on second-degree murder charges, but a Duval County grand jury ruled the collision was a premeditated attack earlier this month and indicted Shepard on the more serious charge.

CodeRED phone messages on tap for Clay

Clay County is offering its citizens an emergency high speed notification system called CodeRED. The system, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office, will provide the county the ability to quickly deliver emergency messages to all or targeted areas. Such messages would be issued "in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action, such as an evacuation, contaminated water, hazardous chemical spill and other emergency incidents where rapid and accurate notification is essential for life safety," according to the release.

Felon accused of supplying drugs to Jacksonville apartments

A tip provided to a Jacksonville police unit designed to combat crime in the city?s most notorious apartment complexes led to the arrest of a convicted drug dealer described by police as a source of trouble in such spots. Michael Anthony Stokes, 33, is being held without bond on charges ranging from trafficking in cocaine to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a police report obtained by The Times-Union today. Police also recovered guns and drugs from his Southside home, where his two children were living.

Former Jackson High classmate charged in slaying of Jacksonville woman

Jacksonville police announced this afternoon the arrest of a man in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Kalil McCoy and say more suspects are being sought. Frederick Lee Wade, 19, is charged with manslaughter in the case. He and three others being sought in the case were acquaintances of the slain woman. Wade and McCoy graduated this year from Andrew Jackson High School. He played on the football team, while she was captain of the band's dance team.

Actor Kirk Cameron and singer-songwriter Warren Barfield will lead a marriage conference at First Baptist Church of Orange Park at 3 p.m. July 31. The duo have been on the "Love Worth Fighting For" tour since February, according to a news release. Best known as teenager Mike Seaver in the 1980s hit TV sitcom "Growing Pains," Cameron has been married to actress Chelsea Noble for 20 years while raising six children. In the 2008 movie "Fireproof," he portrayed a husband whose marriage was dissolving.
