I think that some people are not right in the head if they want to kill a person like the pope. If you do not agree with the things he says find a different more peaceful solution to your issues.

Scotland Pope Assassinate Plot

Either that or they did not have enough to convict them. Maybe they will be released and then watched to see where they go and who they talk to. Maybe there is a larger story here that we are not being told.
