Cash-Strapped Municipalities Cut Back on Remedial Education Local Finland News In English
Last year, schools in Finland were forced to cut remedial education by about one quarter. Since then, private firms have stepped in to try to fill the gap. The Trade Union of Education in Finland (OAJ) says this could be detrimental to Finland?s equal-opportunity education system. Cash-strapped municipalities slashed funding for remedial education dramatically last year. The OAJ estimates the cuts to be at 24 percent. The move has opened up the market for private firms. Currently, there are only a few companies that offer extra tutoring in Finland. Tutor House, which began operations in August, is the largest. Source: Helsinki Times
