I could use some advice. I have been running through my mind to start my own AD&D campaign, but I am unsure how to start it the way I would like.
Pretty much I would like it to work like this"¦
An "agent" of a certain powerful being will confront (no worries the being and the agent are not "evil""¦ but nor are they "good" either ), separately, 5 or 6 adventurers or individuals with the potential to become adventurers. He will offer them a "job" so to speak, saying that his "master" feels that each individual has certain skills and abilities that he would like to put to use. Once each individual accepts (whether eagerly or reluctantly), the agent will gather each of the individuals together. The agent will tell the group that his master is willing to pay them well for their services, and that the agent will "keep in touch" with updated or new assignments as time goes on.
Any ideas how to make this work?
Well, for starters having multiple fighters in the group doesn't really make sense, so the group would have to have a diverse set of classes and races.
Other than that, I don't see any problems except maybe an actual problem with the limitations of using the PHB, DMG, and MM, rather than just using the SRD, the Standard Reference Document. I would link to the SRD I use as a source, for everyone, but I'm unsure if it would be against the board rules or not, and better to err on the side of caution, methinks.
There's plenty of info in the SRD for an incredibly diverse cast of characters. Particularly once they hit level 6/7 and can start grabbing prestige classes.
That's one thing you might consider in your campaign is a starting level greater than 1. It allows for some interesting class combinations, and a whole new level of races, since players could grab LA+1 races and such.
I'm not entirely sure what it is you're asking - what do you mean "how it would work". You'd present the situation and the players would variously "take the hook", I presume - I think maybe I'm not understanding quite what you mean?
What is PHB, DMG, and MM?
Well, first off. I was planning, at least for a beginning, for there to be 5 positions that would need to be fill and chosen from: A Warrior, An Expert, An Arcane Spellcaster, A Divine Spellcaster, and then a potential 5th Character (I see I messed up when saying 5-6 when I meant 4-5). For the beginning part of the campaign, that is what I would require. Also I would defiantly be looking for players that would be sticking around be able to post at least every 1 to 3 days, as I do NOT want someone to come around for a couple of days and then leave, or disappear for a week.
Also, if everyone would be willing, I was planning on allowing everyone to start at level 5.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second off, my problem is this (mostly for JPatt): Should I have as an additional condition with the creation of a player's character that would show how a player would describes how and where the agent will find the character before joining the group, in which I would then post into my Game Thread, or just have it played out in my game's Player's Thread. You see, I am trying for a set up that would allow me to both show an interesting first meeting between agent and character and to save some time so that everyone can start working together. What I mean is, how should I bring together the how and where each player's character is found by the agent.
I would like the player's to have the option of having their character potentially be anywhere, doing anything, and be anyone. The agent would then find the character in said situation.
To put it simply, I wish to add an interesting story element that happens to make the beginning process a bit more complicated.
Do you understand a bit more now?
PHB= Players Handbook, DMG= Dungeon Masters Guide and MM = Monster Manual. These three books are a must if you are planning to run a D&D game.
IF you want to run a game then set it all up in your mind and then on paper of what you expect and want. Then if your starting characters at a advanced level you have to decide what you will be willing to accept with the characters. Most Characters of level 4 or above have a magical weapon, armor or combination of magical items.
Thank you KNtoran, I"m not always good with acronyms, and yes I have those books.
I"m actually going to be studying the DMG and planning out my campaign while I wait for the chance to get the laptop.
For the magical weapons, armor or combination of magical items I will most like just give an acceptable price range and allow the players to choose, understandably with a few limits.
The DMG has a list of wealth-by-level that is usually used to determine starting gold for characters above level one. I am still adamant in my support of the standard reference document over the DMG/PHB/MM, since it has more to work with. It has most of the info that those books have, but it also has a lot more to it, with certain variants from unearthed arcana, and also psionics, with some rulings even for epic level campaigns, or epic skill useage which can occasionally have the requisite DCs met at lower levels. It's pretty much the most in depth and most variety you can get for free when it comes to D&D without breaking copyright laws.
I'm not sure off the top of my head what the PHB DMG and MM have for prestige classes, but I was thinking, for that 5th spot if you don't mind, a Bard that will go into the Dragon Disciple prestige class at 6th level, since that's the earliest it can be taken, due to the prerequisites.
While technically Bards are arcane casters, I don't think taking that spot on the team would be good for a bard, especially one who is going into the DD prestige class.
