Cognitive Dissonance
What exactly is "Cognitive Dissonance"?
A perfect example is the story of "The Emperor's New Clothes." The Emperor was convinced that some fabulous garment was being sewn for him when in fact there was nothing there. Lots of people were drawn into the deception, not wanting to appear stupid.
Conflicting information - your mind knows something to be true, but evidence is presented to contradict that "truth."
The government is great at this, by the way, presenting a view of the world that is much different from the reality of it.
Cognitive Dissonance - anxiety that results from simultaneously holding contradictory or otherwise incompatible attitudes, beliefs, or the like, as when one likes a person but disapproves strongly of one of his or her habits. Ref. Dictionary.reference.com
