I've been watching the new show 'Sister Wives' recently. I find it disturbing and fascinating at the same time. The large multi-family house seems to work well, but the husband seems to have an extreme ego. The oddest part was when one wife said "I wouldn't want to be married to one man, alone."
Sorry, should have clarified. I would not take a tour to invade anyone's personal life. We get a glimpse enough with the tv show. Taking the tour in person would be as already mentioned, the lifting of a weird and illegal curtain.
It doesn't seem any different that the tours that go on here in Lancaster County of Amish farms. It is also a situation of seeing a peek under a curtain that is very misunderstood. Much like the polygamists stigmatized reputation for obscure family ideals, the Amish have remained on the fringe with their puppy mills and horse abuse.
(Ironically an Amish tour doesn't visit an actual Amish Farm, but rather a simulated farm)
The biggest difference seems to be in the clothes and lifestyle choices regarding electricity.
So what makes the polygamists so interesting to visit? No singular dress style, use of all the modern conveniences - are people really so naive that they might think the polygamists will invite us into the bedroom?
Polygamists even send their children to semi-normal schools. Amish children are pulled from school shortly after 10 to work in the fields and family business.
'Don't ask, Don't tell" Isn't that supposed to be the Gay community? Perhaps we should start tours of Gay familys? (Yes, I have many gay friends and would consider such a tour pretty insulting)
