Mormon Homosexuality Poster says, "At first I was against it because of the sanctity of marriage and it's eternal purpose, but now I am not sure. I agree that a Temple marriage can only be between male and female. This is because of the religious sanctity of marriage for eternity, for propogation and simply because that is how God intended it. However, the Church recognizes the validity of civil marriages that are only for this life and not eternity, even though this is not how God intended it. "Your view is... ?" international QUOTE
Because if you believe they're perverted (per definition of "deviation from what is considered to be orthodox or normal") then expecting them to marry people from the opposite sex is pretty stupid.

No, Such an expectation illustrates a belief that they can recover from their addiction.

international QUOTE
It's like if we expect you to now marry people from your same gender and tell you nobody is stopping from doing it.

Doesn't follow. Homosexuality is not gender.

Are you a psychologist? If so, where in the world you get the idea that homosexuality is an addiction?

Comments: Watch and see, I'm willing to bet (not a gambler) that the church will accept civil gay marriage within the next couple of decades if not sooner.

Fair, I'm not a gambler either and I'm convinced the Church will accept it at some point. The social pressure has been humongous and it will take time but they will.

No (and neither are you), but it's interesting to note how the APA was hijacked by it's own extreme minority NAMBLA wing back in the 1970's. You should brush up on that sometime. The "psychology" of homosexuality isn't science at all.

It certainly isn't genetic.

I'll take that bet.

Nice try but let's do it over...Where in the world do you get the idea that homosexuality is an addiction?

Second, are you saying there is zero genetic contribution to homosexuality?

If homosexuality is not genetic, then what else would you like to call it? An illness?

No, I am not necessarily stating that homosexuality has no genetic component, but I think the long and fruitless search for a gay gene shows that there are other factors which increasingly makes homosexuality a choice that can lead to an addiction(unnatural perversion or fetish).

If somehow a gay gene were confirmed, no change in LDS doctrine is necessary as the scriptures already account for it. Homosexuality would still be sin:

international QUOTE
27 And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.
Ether 12:27

7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.
1 Nephi 3:7

So genetics will never be an excuse for sin in LDS theology. There is already precedent in the LDS Church for this. Alcoholism has been discovered to be genetic, yet the LDS Church still expects everyone to obey the Word of Wisdom which forbids alcohol.

The bottom line is that any and all attempts to change LDS doctrine on the matter of homosexuality will be fruitless as they always have been. The Church might present a different face to deflect criticism, but no doctrines will change.

Here is a presentation by Dr. Bill Bradshaw on the genetic components of homosexuality. Dr. Bradshaw is a professor of molecular biology at BYU. In fact this presentation was given at BYU to educate the students on homosexuality. It shows all of the new research and is pretty convincing of the genetic influence of homosexuality. This is the up to date and good research on the subject. [..] Source 4
