As science is perfected the ignorance of past leaders will become more prominent, at least for those who bother to read what they said on the topic.
If shown to be genetic, it wouldn't make any difference in LDS theology. The doctrine is that God gives us weaknesses (Ether 12:27) and there is always a way to overcome them. Consider alcoholism. There is an actual gene for that and yet the Church has not changed the Word of Wisdom.
That's not the point. Members feel that the church has the embodiment of truth so when the leaders speak all that they say is the truth. We know this isn't true of course, even the church has latter had to hush-hush what the leadership has said in the past and put it down as "their opinion". Being a gay wasn't an issue like it is now so whatever was said about it was taken as correct in all aspects.

Comments:Even though I still don't get any kind of gay relationship I feel that when it comes to marriage consenting adults should be able to do what they want. What I don't get is why do they need to try and force churches not in agreement with their relationship to marry them?
New Church Website on Same-Sex Attraction Offers Love, Understanding and Hope
6 December 2012 | In an effort to encourage understanding and civil conversation about same-sex attraction, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has launched the website "Love One Another: A Discussion on Same-Sex Attraction" (www.mormonsandgays.org). It features a number of videos from people who share real experiences from their own perspectives on a sensitive and sometimes emotionally charged topic. Ref. Source 1
I am quite surprised at this web site. The domain they also chose because the Church never refers to homosexuals as "Gay" but people going through "Same sex attraction". Hopefully, this site will open new dialogue and help people.
