Mormon Homosexuality Poster says, "At first I was against it because of the sanctity of marriage and it's eternal purpose, but now I am not sure. I agree that a Temple marriage can only be between male and female. This is because of the religious sanctity of marriage for eternity, for propogation and simply because that is how God intended it. However, the Church recognizes the validity of civil marriages that are only for this life and not eternity, even though this is not how God intended it. "Your view is... ?" After the news about California allowing Gay marriages, the Church released a statement:

QUOTE
"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognizes that same sex marriage can be an emotional and divisive issue. However, the church teaches that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is the basic unit of society. Today's California Supreme Court decision is unfortunate."

The Church will have more pressure to deal with now from both inside and outside of the Church. However, I hope they will not waver on the above position.

LDS Perspective: Gay Marriage - Mormon Gays Studies Doctrine Mormon

I was just thinking about how the law will affect gay couples that are married if one in the couple wants to get baptized. They will actually need a divorce on top of stopping their sexual activity. Or can you be civilly married to the same sex, not engage in an intimate relationship and still be baptized?

I just read an interesting article in the Washington Post Today about some apparent differences between a gay and a straight brain. Here's the link:

I used to be very homophobic through high school and vehemently upheld the belief that gays were going to hell and they had no excuses for their behavior. Lately though, I've come to know some very good people who happen to be homosexual. As far as my perspective on same sex marriage, I believe that the Church does not need to take a stand against the civil unions. I think they should be allowed to live together peacefully and enjoy the tax benefits and will of estates that married couples do. There is no link between homosexuality and pedophilia. There are no studies that prove homosexuality was caused by pedophilia or other environmental behavior. I have no issues with same sex couples raising kids if they chose to do so.

One of the other issues that bothers me is the doctrine of gender. If we were spirits sons and daughters before this world, what is going on with Hermaphrodites? Has the Church ever addressed this phenomena? Of course other maladies like down syndrome or other retardations have been written off as spiritually superior beings and not needing a mortal trial, but what of hermaphrodites?

Gays Mormon Marriage Gay Perspective LDS

I have always thought it odd that the word homophobic is thrown onto people who believe homosexuality is a sin.

Would I be considered premaritalsexaphobic if I think premarital sex is a sin and should not be encouraged by society.

It is fascinating that we live in a time where those who would uphold standards are labeled with a phobia (an irrational fear).

I do not hate those that sin, but I do disagree with certain lifestyles, and it is within my rights as a member of this society to influence the acceptance or rejection of wicked practices (not just homosexuality).

I do have a fear(be it rational or irrational) of the prophesied judgments that have been promised if our nation falls into unrepentant sin. I have a vested interest in doing anything that I can to postpone those judgments. I believe the acceptance and the current trend of embracing homosexuality as well as promiscuous Heterosexual Sex by society leaves us in danger of losing the protection of the Lord as a Nation. He will not bless an unrighteous nation, and he definitely will curse a prideful and rebellious one.

Todd Bennett, 48, and Ron Hunt, 55, are among couples lining up to tie the knot in California as the political battle brews there over same-sex marriage. A recent California Supreme Court ruling allowing gay couples to wed could be overruled in November, when voters decide whether to constitutionally bar same-sex marriage. And leaders in the LDS Church recently issued a statement encouraging its members to support the California marriage amendment.

Dbackers I can never understand where you come from on this. You have said it before and I just don't get it. Is it within our rights to do this, civilly and spiritually speaking? I guess it is obvious that we are doing it, but should we?

Recently on another post, the one on the Declaration of Independence, you said of the Declaration:

Let's look at the exact wording used because it is extraordinary in its simplicity

Declaration of Independence:

that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.


I really like how it says that these rights are unalienable, which means they cannot be taken/given away. By your own admission dbackers, we should be able to equate this statement to the gospel. The way in which you or I or anyone else chooses to use those rights is not up to anyone else, these rights are inalienable, spiritually and civilly.

Now you and I know that wickedness never was happiness, and their pursuit of homosexual acts will not ultimately bring about happiness for them, in our opinion. But it is not up to me or you or anyone else to impose ideas of happiness on anyone else. These are personal decisions to be made by individuals. The decisions can bring about their salvation, or damnation. It is every bit as much their right to follow the path of sin, as it is someone elses right to follow the path to righteousness and ultimately exhaltation.

This is a fear I also share with you, and I think it is a legitimate fear. Of course these are prophesies and will happen regardless. I also have a fear, be it rational or irrational, or making laws based on moral values. I fear that someday the majorities morals will no longer reflect my own, and I will be subject to a law that is contrary to my beliefs. I feel this will be part of our trials in the end of days. But once again, there is probably not a lot that I can do to stop this too.

I believe the ability to raise our families and live our lives righteously is not dependent on what is legal. If we start living our lives in accordance with what is legal there are already plenty of things that we are within our legal rights to do that will surely get us a guaranteed trip to hell. But as I have said before, just because it is legal does not make it right. It is our responsiblity as parents to teach the correct principles in our homes. It is then our hope that when our children are grown that those correct principles will be a foundation for their life. It should not be our responsiblity to make laws that dictate every aspect of life like the Sagisees and the Pharisees did.

I would say 100% yes we should work to keep Marriage defined as a sanctioned union between a Man and a Woman (and it is completely within our rights of citizens of the United States) . Furthermore the Church should continue to use its influence to maintain certain lines that society should never cross . If the Church does not do this then they are a useless entity that could never call itself the Church of Christ.
The Church should always be an instrument in influencing the world for good and not remain on the sidelines in the fight for certain societal limits and restraints. The alternative is a society that has no restraint or limits, one that I do not want my children to be a part of.

All laws are based on moral values.
Do not kill.
Do not steal.
Do not run a red light (protecting life).
These are all laws based on moral values and there are few laws that are not based on moral values. Should these, in your opinion, be done away with just because they are based on a Moral value?

The proscription of so called Homosexual Marriage is not a taking away of a right. Homosexual marriage has never been a right or a protected action under the constitution, therefore the right cannot be taken away. Men may live as they wish but the state does not have to create new rights pertaining to Marriage (as defined as a union between a man and a woman.)


As to quoting the Declaration of Independence:
Homosexual Marriage is not an inalienable right given by the creator(to say so seems odd to me), therefore Using the Declaration of Independence as an argument of Homosexual Marriage to me seems somewhat flawed. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness has nothing to do with the the state licensing of marriage for two men or two women.

Homosexuals in the United States have as much of a right to marry a member of the opposite Sex as you or I do. Therefore they have exactly the same rights to life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness that I have, and we are equal before the law.
