I recently read a good LDS book about this subject. It is titled GATES of HEAVEN, by Matthew B. Brown
It explains what the original temples were like, and why members of the church were encouraged to become masons before they recieved their endowments.
The reason was not a bad reason.
Brigham Young realised that the people could not keep secrets very well at that time. So he encouraged them to join the Masons to learn how to keep secrets in order to train them on how to keep SACRED things SACRED.
AdFontesO, although I appreciate your contribution this board is strictly for members of the Church. There is a topic in the Religions Board about Masons there or you can start a thread in that board if you have a specific question. Thanks.
Nh, I don't see the big deal about Masons and LDS members. The Masons are a 'fraternity', I'm sure most LDS members who are Americans are familiar with them since they have lots of them in the Universities. If you visit the Masons official web site or in any other you will find that they specifically say that they're not a religion. It seems like the friend of your son is trying to deceive him by giving the wrong information, the same exactly thing about Joseph Smith and the oath to Lucifer is all over anti-mormon web sites and books. Make sure you let your son know about this. How old is he by the way?.
I went to Scotland on my mission, and while I was there I have met many masons and some have told me hints of various things, but between that, research I have done on my own, and prayer I have also noticed similarities between our temples and masonic temples, and have come to this conclusion above all else....
God grants mercy, revelation, and incite after all the work we can do to prepare ourselves, the masons may have had much of the temple ordinances handed down and Joseph may have been instructed to go there partly to learn what he could of the ordinances, so that he could then compare to the scriptures and pray so he might receive further incite into how to use those ordinances correctly, and which ordinances to use. The lord will not always tell us the answer if we can do a little research to discover it for ourselves. for it is through this process that we will better ourselves far more than always relying on him, after all that is why we are here, to receive experiences (good and bad) to learn how we might live on our own and become more like our heavenly father, able to decern for ourselves what to do, and how to do it.
Questions... Questions...
