Belgium's Francois Englert, Britain's Peter Higgs won the Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday for their "Theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles," The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced. Ref. USAToday
This year's Nobel Prize for physics has been awarded to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura "For the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources," The awarding committee said.
The committee said the trio's work is in keeping with the spirit of Alfred Nobel, the founder of the prize, because LED lights have ushered in a new energy- and environmentally-friendly light source.
The Nobel prizes in chemistry, literature and economic sciences will be announced later this week, as will the Nobel Peace Prize. Ref. CNN
Kajita and McDonald awarded Nobel prize in physics
Takaaki Kajita of Japan and Arthur McDonald of Canada have been awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in physics. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences cited the researchers "For the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass." Neutrinos are particles that whizz through the universe at nearly the speed of light. Ref. USAToday
