What do you know about this sacred Book of Scripture regarded as the foundation of the Mormon faith and what The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is built on?

Melodilynn -- I really appreciate your words of wisdom, and it's true that we must find the wisdom and not just read the words. But I do feel that in order to get a "feel" for the wisdom, for me personally, I need to be more familiar with the story on just a basic stand point. Then I can delve deeper into what's between the lines, so to speak, afterwards. That also comes from researching a point, looking up a scripture that was read in a talk, studying a particular topic. I'm just thrilled at this point to be on a regular reading schedule smile.gif

Tena, yes, I'm also beginning the D&C. I've never read all of the content there, and I need to do that. I feel like I'm so far behind in everything that I should have been learning for the past 18 years, that I'll have to go at double time to catch up to where I want to be... But I'm just happy to begin, to know where I need to be, and to do what needs doing.

What I have found is that the average long time active member doesn't do a lot of reading/studying themselves in the scriptures so if you really continue to read the scriptures regularly you will be further along than most in no time at all. I suspect from reading your posts that you already are.

Now that my seminary class is done (Old Testament this year) I can get back to reading the Book of Mormon. I want to be sure to read the material each week for Gospel Doctrine before class at a minimum. Here is an example of what I am talking about. Most members don't even do this amount of reading each week before class.

I know what you mean, Farseer. I've also never read the D&C all the way through, or the Pearl of Great Price. I really should do that. I have read the Old Testament through once and the New Testament a couple of times, but I have really neglected the D&C and The Pearl of Great Price. Thanks for the reminder.

I also have to say that since I was last here the look of the board has changed quite a bit. I'm still getting used to the new look and new way of doing things. But, I'm getting there, so please be patient with me.

I started reading the Book of Mormon in Spanish again. I cannot believe that I feel more comfortable reading it in English than in Spanish undecided.gif . I think when books are translated we missed so much!. But it is a humble experience it brings back lots of memories and give me the strengh I need in order to deal with my day.

One thing that helps with the Doctrine and Covenants, is a book on the early history of the church to read along with your study of the D&C. One of the best books I can recommend for this is called Joseph Smith and the Restoration: A History of the LDS Church to 1846. Unfortunately, this book is no longer in print. However, if there is a Deseret Industries around, or a ward member who has been around for awhile, then you can probably find or borrow a copy. Regardless, there are many books on the early history of the church that can help you with your experience reading and studying the D&C. Just make sure the book is fairly comprehensive so that you can understand the context in which Joseph received some of those revelations. The D&C is a book of enormous power without such study aids, but with them, my testimony grew so much.

Sometimes I think we see Joseph as an almost mythic figure, and when we see how he struggled everyday with the welfare of the saints, with the battle for his own soul as he was bombarded by the adversary. How he humbled himself before the Lord and put the needs of his people before himself and his family on countless occasions under threat of death or worse. I know that knowing the early history of the church (a subject that truthfully, when I started my study of it, I was worried of how it would affect my testimony) has made my testimony grow tremendously. So many apostates speak of how many people left the church, even apostles of the early church, but they don't speak of how many came back and were re-baptized, or who never gave up there testimony of what they saw. And I wonder how many of us would have had the courage to stand up when we were faced with some of the horrifying adversity that these early saints were.

I'm sorry for getting on a bit of a rant here...

But I just want to re-iterate that if you find a book on the early history of the church that can supplement your reading of the D&C, it would help you gain so much more knowledge than you even normally would.

NOTE: Let us keep in mind that this thread is about the Book of Mormon, you may wish to start a new thread to deal with the Doctrine & Covenants or other books of scripture.

"Let me read that promise to you, from the last chapter in the Book of
Mormon: 'And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye
would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things
are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent,
having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the
power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may
know the truth of all things.' (Moro. 10:4-5.)

"No missionary, no member can fulfill that promise--neither Apostle nor
President can fulfill that promise. It is a promise of direct revelation to
you on the conditions described in the book. After you have read the Book
of Mormon, you become qualified to inquire of the Lord, in the way that
He prescribes in the book, as to whether the book is true. You will be
eligible, on the conditions He has established, to receive that personal
revelation."

(Boyd K. Packer, "The Things of My Soul," Ensign, May 1986, 61)

Yes, you are right Mormon. I'm sorry about that. I saw what the previous posters had said and just wanted to make a short point and as I said it turned into an OT rant a bit.

my apologies wink.gif
