I would like to thank Rob for his comments. They have given me much to think on. There are those who think that Joseph Smith was the Holy Ghost.

According to Heber C. Kimball, Smith "many times" said: "Would to God, brethren, I could tell you who I am! Would to God I could tell you what I know! But you would call it blasphemy, and there are men upon this stand who would want to take my life." Smith may have come close to revealing his secret identity when he declared in August 1842, according to the record of Franklin D. Richards, that "the Holy Ghost is now in a state of Probation which if he should perform in righteousness he may pass through the same or a similar course of things that the Son has." If Smith had reference to himself as some Mormons at the time believed, he may well have considered martyrdom as the best conclusion to his mission. --
"Prophet Puzzle" Revisited by Dan Vogel;
Mormon History Association Meeting,

Dan Vogel, 1996. Richards quote found in Ehat and Cook, Words of Joseph Smith,p.245. [/Quote]

Cori's remarks trouble ME, yet I find them understandable. He said:

QUOTE
This thread really bothers me though. The church does not teach the survivalist mentality. That comes from folks looking beyond the mark.

QUOTE
It matters so very much how we regard and view Jesus Christ.  Some seek to substitute Ceasars for Christ.  Others are blinded because they are looking beyond the mark, when the mark is Christ.- CR April, 1976, p. 34.

So, Christ is the mark. Who looks beyond it, and how do they do it?

QUOTE
14 But behold, the Jews were a stiffnecked people; and they despised the words of plainness, and killed the prophets, and sought for things that they could not understand. Wherefore, because of their blindness, which blindness came by looking beyond the mark, they must needs fall; for God hath taken away his plainness from them, and delivered unto them many things which they cannot understand, because they desired it. And because they desired it God hath done it, that they may stumble. -Jacob 4:14.

So, these people must fall because they are blind. They got blind by looking beyond the mark. How does the verse describe those who look beyond the mark?
1- They despise plainness.
2- they kill the prophets.
3- they seek for things they could not understand.

So, if a person believes that food storage may be needed to make it through a tough time in the wilderness, one is looking beyond the mark? I don't think so.

Cori criticizes these Exodus believers/ 'survivalists" for assuming certain things such as water. Well, many have had similar dreams indicating these 'survivalist" situations in which there is always a source of water. These ideas rely on laymen revelation (never to be construed as binding doctrine), and the idea that God is watching over his people. I prefer that to the idea that I will rely on the military to survive.

QUOTE (FarSeer @ 10-Nov 03, 5:46 PM)

Learn how to dress a side of beef

Learn how to prepare your own live chicken

Oops...I don't own cattle! Or chickens...

I guess I'll be depending on the farmers...hopefully the cattle can move quicker than tanks!

So, in the last days will we still have specialized professions or will we all have to learn how to do everything ourselves? I'm being facetious here, since what I want to say is I can't see a day when everyone has to know how to sew or else go naked. That seems to be one benefit of actually...gathering as a people.

I guess if you want to live a hermetic life when the times get tough that's fine. However, last I heard societies of high specialization in the workforce are much more prosperous than the savages. I don't see why a society like the church couldn't come together and do all those long-term things in a similar way we've always done it. Not everyone was a farmer during the time of Christ, you know.

I wonder if we're going a little overboard with this preparedness stuff. Sure, it's good advice to keep a long storage of food and common sense to learn how to prepare it.

But beyond that, if I'm left alone in this world I'd rather die. I just like people too much.

Oh, and if my life is reduced to butchering cows myself I think it would be a relief to be taken out by a mortar or something before then.

What will we do without our iphones? Or electricity?! The world will truly be ripe to be burned then.

--And I'm not being facetious, either. wink.gif

Agreed. The United Order is nothing if not specialized. Many people see these tent cities as not quite united order, but you can bet there will be trading, etc. Not everyone will know everything.

All that matters is that you have shown that you tried to get prepared.

Have any of you read the talk by President Kimball based on Leviticus 26? In this chapter the Israelites are given a blessing or cursing based on their choices and behaviors. President Kimball commented on the dishonoring of the Sabbath that he had witnessed in Salt Lake and a recent drought that had been occurring and then he made an incredible comment that struck me hard,

QUOTE
""Can you think how the highways could be made desolate? When fuel and power are limited, when there is none to use, when men will walk instead of ride?
"Have you ever thought, my good folks, that the matter of peace is in the hands of the Lord who says:
""And I will bring a sword upon you . . ." (Lev. 26:25.)
"Would that be difficult? Do you read the papers? Are you acquainted with the hatreds in the world? What guarantee have you for permanent peace?
"". . . And ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy." (Lev. 26:25.)
"Are there enemies who could and would afflict us? Have you thought of that?
""And I will make your cities waste," he says, "and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation. . . .
""Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies" land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths.
""As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest [when it could] in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it." (Lev. 26:31, 34-35.)
"Those are difficult and very serious situations, but they are possible."  (Spencer W. Kimball, "The Lord Expects His People to Follow the Commandments,"
Ensign, May 1977, pp. 4-6)
There may be transportation available to us in days of need, but there may not. There may be food and clothing and shelter, but there may not.
What is important is to seek and follow the Spirit in our preparation and to so what we can. What I have noted in previous posts are people listening and preparing. And I so appreciate the references to Avraham Gilead's books.

Part of that preparation is security. What's the point of all that food stored if people try to steal it from you? What's the point of a first aid kit if they are trying to kill you. Not to be all paranoid, just talking about the facts of how humans behave when under crisis. Part of preparation needs to be about security. Maybe a shelter. Remember the days when people had shelters in their backyard in case of nuclear fallout? Why did we stop with those?

Last Days Exodus

Ammon, I appreciate your concern for safety in the midst of turmoil and wondering why we would store when things may be taken from us.

About ten years ago during Stake Conference our Stake President expressed his thoughts about people preparing for conflict with weapons to prevent another Haun's Mill right along with following the counsel of the Prophets to store food. In essence what he said was to know what is real. That having a testimony of Christ would help us more than an Uzi machine gun. That the things of eternity are real and the material things of this world are not. But sometimes it is hard to keep that perspective.

I have pondered a lot on things that are real. And have worked to strengthen my testimony and have faith that prayers are heard, to believe that my voice and name are recognized by a loving Father in Heaven who will help me in all of my endeavors, that my needs are known as are all the seasons of my life.

I know hard times are coming. It has been prophecied. And am in the process of increasing my food storage and medical supplies because delivery of food and supplies to stores from foreign markets is not guaranteed. I am also learning to make soap (at least I have a book to teach me : ) ) and am gathering the supplies for my first attempt. And I am actually attending my wards provident living classes which is a chore for me. I even made an emergency stove which I never thought could have imagined doing.

So what is real if people try or do steal from us? We seek and believe in Christ and do the best we can, listening to the Spirit and not being bitter or vengeful but forgiving. (Hard!) And we start over just as we (our forebearers) have done again and again. And we try not to fear what man may do. This is what I am trying to do and be, faithful in the face of adversity.

Well you're thinking more in the offensive and I'm thinking more in the defensive. You need an escape plan, that is what an exodus is, where you leave or escape. See I'm thinking of keeping my stash at a safe location and go there.
