Mormon doctrine on polygamy Mormon Doctrine on Plural Marriage - This Thread goes deep into all the angles of Mormon Polygamy, the requirement of Celestial Marriage which once encompassed Plural Marriage and the current standing of it with the modern Church. Also deeply analyzed is Joseph Smith's secret practise of it that latter lead to his death. Controversial Mormon Issue.

Welcome again (see replies to your starting threads). Thanks for your contribution. We do have a thread for Jesus being married, you should look for it within the board. We have progressed a lot through this topic. the current question is...

Are you ready to live the Law of Celestial Marriage (Plural Marriage), if it were brought back to the earth today?

Offtopic but,
I tried to recreate the error you said about the firsttimer's page, but was unable to do so. Maybe you left the window open and your browser cached it. If you have any further troubles please use the Contact page and not posts here.

Almost certainly not. And this is one of the questions I frequently ask myself concerning my faithfulness.

QUOTE
Did Joseph have physical relations with anyone but Emma

According to my great-great-great aunt, Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner, he did, and had several children outside of his marriage to Emma.

QUOTE
Why Emma denied Joseph participating in plural marriage

I can't, of course, answer for her. However, I do have some thoughts about it.

There is some indication (I don't have any documentation for this) that Emma may have stayed in Missouri with the consent and support of Brigham Young for the express purpose of protecting and preserving the Inspired Version of the Bible and other important artifacts. If this was so, then she would have had to take a stand against plural marriage just to continue to exist, let alone have any influence with the various people and groups who rejected Brigham's claim to the Presidency. Yes, it would have been disingenuous of her to do this, but prophets and other spiritual giants have frequently had to resort to strategem to accomplish the Lord's work.

Another possibility is that she was just plain tired of the persecution, the trials, the sheer hardship that she had endured. Again, she would have had to stand against plural marriage to continue in Illinois. If this was the case, I do not doubt that she did so with the Lord's full approval (as well as her husband's), as very few women have had to endure as much as she did, and still hold to the faith.

Finally, maybe she just plain denied it. Perhaps it was too much for her.

QUOTE
Is it doctrinal to be sealed to someone who is lawfully married

I don't see any problem with it, as long as the "spiritual" marriage remained non-physical.

QUOTE
Is it doctrinal to be sealed to someone already sealed to someone else

I don't know.

That is an unusual answer, most men jump at the idea. Waht are your reasons?

Mary Lightner's message is still kept in the BYU records, I wonder how they view her words? Is she then a liar or did Joseph have physical relations. For such a strong point mentioned in her words and then keep it for all these years there must be some truth? Nighthawk, you should do some more research into it?

  • I don't feel worthy
  • I don't think my marriage is in good enough shape
  • My wife doesn't really believe in it
  • I haven't yet improved my "spiritual" hearing to be guided by the Holy Ghost in this

In the matter of my marriage being in good enough shape, I have gotten indications that few marriages are, but that entering into celestial plural marriage causes all parties to rely on the Spirit, so that it becomes good enough.

I have read her autobiography a few times. I don't believe that she is lying.

I have read other support for the idea that he had physical relations with others, but I can't find them right now.

No way am I ready. Not because I don't believe in the principal, but because I am not secure enough in who I am and in my worthyness for being loved. I am just way to insecure. I would always be on my guard and also wondering whom my husband loved more. I would be in a constant state of competition with his other wife/wives. This would not be a good way to live.

I believe I wll be prepared to live this law one day, but probably not in this life on this side of the veil.

Thanks both for your answers. It shows how much of a spiritual thing this is more than physical. Nighthawk, all the best to you in your marriage.

Offtopic but,
I just thought of something. Why don't we have a married couples advice board? I think it will do nicely in the mature section?

I don't think I'm "ready" right this second. But I do know that I could live as Wife #2 or #3 --- and, in fact, I expect to at some point. And in knowing I could live as #2 or #3, I could live as #1 with compassion toward others. Of course, a lot depends on the Patriarch in the scenario as well.

I've gone through a lot in the past 10 years or so, and realized during that process many things about my own personality that I didn't know before. A great deal of work has been done recently to correct flaws and enhance the good points. Plenty of work left to be done. I don't think I'm ready spiritually, and I'm working on other facets.
But if asked, I'm resolved to be prepared for it.

I like how you put that Farseer, I think it may well apply to all of us. I do wonder if there will be a 'ranking' system among wives or if it will be more like a council.
