We always talk about Emma Smith denying that the Prophet Joseph Smith ever practiced polygamy, however it seems like Joseph Smith himself also denied it:

Comments: Why do Mormons think that it is OK to take another man's wife to be your own? No where does god say that a man should take another man's wife even the Book of Mormons does not say that is OK but it was OK for Joseph Smith?
I originally started this Thread some years ago when my interest in the Topic of Plural Marriage within the history of the Mormon Church increased. It was kept in the Mature LDS section but has now been moved here, the Public LDS Board as will all the rest of Threads. Let the Discussion continue....

Comments:I can live with plural marriage. Some days I kind of like the idea especially when my wife is moody I can always go with wife #2 or #3. Seriously though the most bothersome thing about the early practice was Joseph Smith taken married men's wives has his own. This was condemned as early as Christ's walk through Israel where he was asked questions about a woman being with more than one man. It just doesn't seem right.
Nighthawk, I would love to [read] of the endowment you mentioned re: integration? Of plural marriage. I am a fundamentalist and would love to compare it with the version that we are currently using.

Comments: Given the complications involved with this kind of relationship I cannot see why any LDS member would seek to live this here and now. I believe for this to effectively work a true celestial environment is needed and that cannot be found on a telestial planet.
Regarding scarcity of men, a reason for plural marriage that at times has been used to justify the practice. The records do not support any shortage of men. If it truly was to just help the single sisters, the bishop's storehouse would do just fine.
If I would follow your logic regarding the fact that we live in a telestial world and therefore cannot live a Celestial relationship, then what would that say for Joseph Smith, Brigham Young etc, not to mention Jesus Christ?
One can live in a Telestial world because the majority of the human race operates at that level, yet you can operate at a Terrestrial level (For example) If that premise is not true, the conclusion is that the First Presidency (For example) are also operating on a telestial level.
Celestial Plural Marriage is in my opinion the most difficult requirement. It all depends upon the participants involved to make it work successfully.
Friend, can you quote your references that indicate this tremendous shortage of men? To me this is not at all a reason to marry a woman. Also, going back to the Old Testament era. The victorious army at the end of the day, tended to take with them a great number of wives/girls from the party that lost the battle. If that is correct, there might not be enough women left, let alone an over supply of women available for marriage.
A point of clarification:
I don't think Joseph Smith was sealed to females already sealed to their husbands.
Men are never sealed to a wife. A wife is sealed to her husband.
