Mormon doctrine on polygamy Mormon Doctrine on Plural Marriage - This Thread goes deep into all the angles of Mormon Polygamy, the requirement of Celestial Marriage which once encompassed Plural Marriage and the current standing of it with the modern Church. Also deeply analyzed is Joseph Smith's secret practise of it that latter lead to his death. Controversial Mormon Issue.

In the footnotes of the LDS version, it says "because of scarcity of men due to wars."

This may be true, but remember, the footnotes are the opinions of the authors, not scripture.  I tend to agree with it, but don't put any authority into it.

Just putting forth a different view on the motivation of the seven women, and using the "setting" provided by the Brethren.  Since we are currently at war, in more danger of imminent war, and have the potential of future wars, I certainly believe it.  And feel as if I need to plan for it  *in my lifetime.*

In my opinion, of course.

Interesting. So you believe we will be 'asked' to live this law again (within this mortal life), or will men take it upon themselves? If the latter, will it be sanctioned by God?

I like what Roz said.

Personally, I am convinced that the Church will never incorporate it into the general doctrine again.  The saints rejected it, after the most strongly worded warnings by the Bretheren, including Wilford Woodruff.  I do believe that the Lord will call, and may even now call, certain people who are truly prepared to live it, despite any possible persecution.

I don't know if we will be officially "asked" to live it -- at least publicly.  I do know that LDS men can be sealed in the temple to more than one woman (though women may not be sealed to more than one man).  So is that a precursor to future events, or just a leftover from the past?  Will we, as a church unit, be better able to follow the law in the future, due to world events?

I don't know.

I *do* know that I have very strong impressions about this, and how this may affect me.  Since I began to study more about it after I read this thread the first time, and prayed about it, I have had very interesting "answers" to my questions.   And it's something I feel I must prepare for.

In my opinion.

This has brought up a question in my mind, and yes, it is only a thought... but, could it be that there are those designated for that (enter into plural marriage if certain circumstances arised) already? Strange question huh? Not really since Plural Marriage was actually being practised by a few before it was brought to the general public's awareness or even sustained by the members.

It's entirely possible.  And, given the immediate "gut reaction" a lot of people have about plural marriage (negative or positive), I would imagine a "select" or "chosen" few would be privy to it first.  Can you imagine how almost scary that would be?

Exactly.

Until men (in general) can stop thinking of it as a "harem" and women (in general) can begin to view it as potentially beneficial to them, it *cannot* be very widespread.

IMO, of course.

I agree with Nighthawlk that I don't think the Church will ever be able to live this Law again, I think they know of the pressure because of the past and I don't really see them with the least intention to bring it back, at least, not for now. smile.gif
And if they do, I don't think it will be practise openly.
