I think most religions, irregardless of beliefs, are complex beasts. Polygamy is not readily discussed and it was what I consider deeper doctrine, not the basic tenants(Sp?) of the Latter Day Saints.
It becomes very hard to explain to members that starting with basics helps you understand the difficult things. Those that rush ahead are more likely to get confused, lose their testimony, fall away from the faith, and even fight the Gospel and the Church.
There was a lot of talk about plural marriage at one time but that has died down some with the LGBT community in the church becoming more vocal.

Comments: When I first joined the church they told us that the reason for plural marriage was because during the pioneer crossing many men died and there was a need for women and children to be taken care of. I later learned that wasn't true and Joseph Smith was practicing plural marriage secretly long before any thought about the pioneer crossing.

Comments: This topic has been discussed so many times and in so many ways. There are some things for certain that we should all know:
1. The church did practice polygamy and it wasn't because the pioneers needed a way to keep widowed woman and children in a home.
2. Joseph Smith was said he was told to take up more than one wife before making it doctrinal. Emma, his first and legal wife never consented to any of the marriages. She left him when he chose to go with a girl who was not an adult and whom Emma saw as a daughter. Oliver Cowdery also left for that reason.
3. I would say that if it weren't for polygamy Joseph may have been able to reach to Utah and not died in the way he did. Taken other people's wives is not looked on nicely even in today;'s standards.
