As for how we should respond and how the church should respond to the so-called "anti-Mormons" it is not the churches responsibility to deal with it. They would be doing a disservice to themselves to even acknowledge it. This is seen as a weakness to some, Like the Tanners, and Ed Deckers who claim the churches lack of an official response is the same as the church stating that there is not answer and that they (the critic) are correct in their assumptions, but it is not! That is not the churches purpose. There are several organizations that are dedicated to the defense of the church, hundreds of web sites that are. We as individuals have an obligation to seek truth, we should have answers, answer for whom though? We are not getting answers for the man outside temple square holding signs, or the people who gather together in councils against the church, we are doing it for those inside the church asking questions, and those who are actually looking for an answer to the questions poised by disenchanted members. What if no one answered these questions? It's necessary to answer the questions; we should have physical knowledge of the church as well as a spiritual knowledge.
QUOTE |
7 Wherefore, confound your enemies; call upon them to meet you both in public and in private; and inasmuch as ye are faithful their shame shall be made manifest. 8 Wherefore, let them bring forth their strong reasons against the Lord." (Doctrine & Covenants 71: 7-8) "Every member of the Church ought to know that... [The Book of Mormon] is true, and we ought to be prepared with an answer to all those critics who condemn it." (Joseph F. Smith) " 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ." "This entire people have become as a city upon a hill which cannot be hid. Sometimes we take offense when one who is a member of the Church is involved in a crime and the public press is quick to say that he is a Mormon. We comment among ourselves that if he had been a member of any other church, no mention would have been made of it.
"Yet, is not this very practice an indirect compliment to our people? The world expects something better of us, and when one of our number falters, the press is quick to note it. We have, indeed, become as a city upon a hill for the world to see. If we are to be that which the Lord would have us be, we must indeed become 'a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that [we] should shew forth the praises of him who hath called [us] out of darkness into his marvelous light.' (1 Pet. 2:9.)"
(Gordon B. Hinckley, "A City upon a Hill," Ensign, July 1990, 4)
"We declare to the world that the priesthood has been restored, God's government is on the earth, His pattern is established that will lead us back to His presence. We believe we have the best answer to the question, What seek ye? As the Savior taught, 'But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you' (Matthew 6:33)."

Mormons - When Shall We Defend? Mormon Publicty (Hover)

Comments: I used to think that defending the church was pretty easy to do but with more things starting to surface in the public's eye it's getting more difficult. I'm referring to Mountain Meadows, gay rights issues, and documentaries that have been created on us that are fairly in depth. Of course there is the internet too and everything is just there in the open.
Mormons need to work to increase favor
SANDY - More Americans have a strongly unfavorable impression of Mormons than a strongly favorable one - by a ratio of 5-to-1 - and it's up to Mormons themselves to correct the situation, a public opinion pollster said Friday. Ref. Source 2
Mormon bashing and other predictable online behavior
If you"ve ever followed discussions on news articles at any Utah media websites - The Salt Lake Tribune, KSL, The Herald Journal - you know what I"m talking about. A news story could be about ice cream, tulips, synagogues, mountain biking, jail food, you name it, and somehow somebody will always find a way to slip in a disparaging remark about Utah's dominant religion. Mormon Church uses YouTube to battle stereotypes
"People think we're a bunch of weirdos," said sound guy Jason Allred. Weird is not the mission here. Imagine you're Mormon. People think you have eight wives, that you're not diverse, that you don't believe in Jesus, that you're in a cult. You're associated with compound raids, homogenized hairstyles and underage marriages. Folks flip to Big Love and Sister Wives and think of you. Ref. Source 7
