Accepting Callings - Page 2

I think that ideally a calling is extended only after careful consideration and prayer with time allowed to receive confirmation of the appointment/calling.  However, we are human.  As such we tend to rely on our own intellect, desires and concerns more than we do our prayers.  I was once asked to substitute in Primary for a few weeks.  I did so and then the Primary presidency changed and I still kept teaching.  I didn't know at that time about 'callings'  so I taught for three years without being called or set apart.  It was a case of falling through the cracks in the system.  No one knew I hadn't been called during this time as the bishopric changed also and the Primary presidency changed about three times.  When I was extended a new calling I then realized what had happened and mentioned it to my Bishop.  He insisted on releasing me from my primary calling because I had worked diligently for those three years as a 'substitute'.  I have many callings since then, including one where I was released and not informed of the change.  We all make mistakes even those in "higher" callings.  What we all do is to try to be the best whoever we can be.  What is the difference between a calling and an assignment?  Such as I have a calling to keep the record of our ward's assignments for the the staffing of the Temple cafeteria support team.  These people are asked to fill a time slot as an assignment.  They are not sustained as such in Sacrament.  I do know that many prayers and desperation tactics were used to fill our time slots.  So I do not know the difference other than the sustaining and being set apart; is there one?

So, each week, I get to sit on the floor, play with toys, read stories, and eat animal cookies.  What more can you ask for?  Oh, yeah, I also get to associate with all the wonderful little spirits (we have over 30 children in our nursery).

A calling involves being approved by certain leaders, sustained by the members and set apart by the laying on of hands, an assignment does not require any of that. References for this are: D&C 26:2, 28:13, 38:34 and 41:9, also setting appart: D&C 42:11.

I have served for a little over a year as the Physical Facilities Rep for our ward.  We weren't the "host" ward for the building, so I was essentially the assistant for the main PFR in the other ward.

This is the fun part about being in a big ward I guess...you have this 'fancy name' callings smile.gif I suppose because wards are so big they have callings for everybody wink.gif I think is sweet.

o, he brought up the fact that they wanted to release me and my family from this calling.  Then they extende the very best calling in the entire church - NURSERY!!

LOL I will be willing to pay to see you playing with the little kids and eating animal cookies! ;D I think is great that they also call brothers for this kind of callings, they usually call women for this kind of things, I'm sure the mothers there love ya...they need the break wink.gif

During the summer a couple of years ago, I was asked to substitute in Primary.  At the same time, our ward was going through some upheavals.  I was called as PFR at the same time.  I was actually only asked to substitute for a couple of weeks, while they found a "summer substitute".  (We live in a ward that is made up largely of students at the University of Michigan, so many go home for the summer.)

Well, the new Primary President didn't realize what had happened.  She knew that I had the calling of PFR, so wasn't a permanent teacher.  Finally, one day, the topic came up and I mentioned that I really needed to be available for Priesthood meetings.  She found another teacher for me right away.

However, during that time, she saw how I dealt with the children.  My youngest daughter, now 8, was in the class, along with a boy who is the epitome of "hyperactive."  I was able to deal with the boy who is hyper, because both my oldest and youngest sons are somewhat hyper, although not as bad.

So, she specifically asked for me for the nursery.  And I love it.

I have a "following" of four or five little ones.  Most weeks, no matter where I sit in the room, they all gather around me, bring me toys to play with, books to read to them, etc.  One of them is a little girl that my daughters have frequently babysat, and who spent a lot of time among our family during Sacrament meeting (her dad was in the bishopric, and her mom was busy with the other children, so we held Natalie and kept her happy).

It is a lot of fun to roll a ball to each of them, or use a car to keep them happy.  Since my youngest is now growing up too quickly, and there aren't any grandchildren on the horizon, this will have to do.  It would be better if I could babysit some infants, but they all grow up so quickly that I lose them!  (We have had some families where I was able to do this during sunday school and priesthood meeting.)

Anyway, it probably isn't all that strange a sight.  With six children, and being the oldest of six, I have a lot of practice.

Nighthawk, that is great. It is especially good to know a man is selected to be with children, because it shows their true nature.

Great job, can you come to Trinidad? smile.gif

As a side thought... It is very important to note that callings do not save men, serving saves men. Many focus so much on the 'height' of their calling than the 'vastness' of it. If accepting each call is seen as a great honour for service and  also accountability then I think the approach in acceting and in extending the call will be genuine.
[offtopic]My Branch President spoke with me today and seems like they have plans for me already (no rest for the wicked). Fortunately because it was a pre-interview I was able to express what my temporal situations are beforehand, thus making it 'easier' for them to be inspired. He said next Sunday he will talk again. Let's see.[/offtopic]

Nighthawlk, what a great experience!  I wish you was around to give me a hand with Felipe although I don't know if anybody can handle him :smile.gif He's what I call 'spirited child' ;D
I am excited about having a calling in my branch, I love to teach so I would like a calling as a teacher  but something I don't want to is Primary lol don't take me wrong people, nothing wrong with the kids... its just I need a break from children at least once a week wink.gif (yeah, don't you love me? I'm so Molly Mormon ;D )
Nah, seriously...I cannot wait for a calling, I love to serve in the Church and callings are such a great opportunity to learn and feel more close to Heavenly Father. Let's see what he has in store for me...

Accepting Callings - Page 2

I moved to South Carolina recently and they found out that I can lead the singing so like every other Ward I have been in, I am Music Chairman and direct the choir. I have had the same position for the last umteen years, even since I was 15 years old. (Do you remember the song practice during Sunday School in the 60's? I did this even as a teenager.)

I really had a poor attitude about this position this time. I figured I wasn't growing and wasn't challenged. One day I was reading my Great Grandfathers journal and found out he was an Elders Quorum President for 17 years! After many prayers and pondering, I have come to realize that I have been blessed with a gift like my Great Grandfather. Many of the wards I have been in just didn't have had a choir until I moved there.  Quite honestly, there isn't anywhere I would rather be than listening to our wonderful choir and helping them serve our ward with their sweet music and talents. We seldom have a "rest hymn" now.

I did talk to the Bishop about also getting a "growth" position if one is available so I also now teach the 12-13 yr old Sunday School and also work in the Stake FHC once a month. However, I look forward to many years as a music chorister and music chairman....

nh, wow what a great calling! I love music in general and here where I'm living at the present (tiny island of Trinidad and Tobago) there are almost no people who knows about music or how to play the piano. I think music makes such a great difference in  our meetings!.
Wow, reading the journal of your great-grandfather! what a blessing!
