You Have To Ask To Get Revelation?

As I was analyzing today a few revelations that the Prophets have received throughout the years, I realized that in a lot of cases, the revelation came about AFTER the Prophet have inquired about it and not as a "natural" process. Let me explain:

1. Word of Wisdom: Emma Smith was tired of cleaning a room full of tobacco, complained to Joseph and he inquired of the Lord about it and that's how the revelation was received.

2. Blacks and the Priesthood: The blessings of the Priesthood were restored to all men regardless of race back in 1978. It was Pres. Kimball's approach to the Lord that came about this revelation. It took several approaches by the Prophet to get it.

3. Plural Marriage: The initial revelation for plural marriage occurred when Joseph Smith was studying about the Old Testament patriarch's polygamy and inquired of the Lord for more information. Then he received the revelation.

4. Law of Tithing: The Saints have been given the Law of Consecration but it was until Joseph Smith asked the Lord for how much exactly the Saints should give, he received the revelation of the Law of Tithing.

So my question is: Is it a requirement for a Prophet to approach the Lord in order to RECEIVE a revelation?

Well didn't this happen to Moses? When people were hungry, thirsty, etc it was him who has to ask the Lord for help so in these cases we can say the Lord seem to expect some sort of approach to Him first although not a requirement.

Comments: I think what you described is the normal method of receiving revelation. But I once had the revelation to understand that my two year old son was alone by the pool and about to take a dive.

I had no prior thought to that happening.
