It is true that this content can be found in less than R ratings and also that the ratings aren't the same for movies through out the world. For example, Passion is rated R in the US and PG 14 in Trinidad. However, we should be avoiding all of this regardless of the rating. |
I heard something that I'm trying to prove wrong and need some assistance. A fellow sister in Christ told me that Pres Hinkley was asked his opinion on the movie and that he replied "I stand firm on my previous council on rated R movies". I am convinced that this is a myth and that of coarse since this was such a contraversal movie that some mormon myths had to start sooner or later. I tried doing a search on the subject and found nothing to support this sisters claim. Anything anyone has heard as a direct comment in regards to this film from a GA? Before I try to convince her is there anything that anyone can reference? This is just like the whole The Excorcist thing all over again though I am not comparing the two movies and feel that they are in two differ boats all together if decided to watch. If there is something in the mature I'm sorry but I havent commited to venture there yet.
Hows that
I would like to weigh in on this discussion and suggest an "acid test" criteria (in the form of a question) for deciding if it is appropriate to watch a movie, regardless of rating. In doing this I believe that the decision is purely individual and should be based on principle, not rule or law. That criteria is as follows:
Whether in a movie theater, in the comfort of your own home, or else where, would you invite, and feel comfortable with the companionship of, the Savior to watch the movie you are considering? If the answer is yes, go right ahead and watch the movie. If there is a question in your mind though, you may want to ponder on it a bit. Ask yourself, is this what the Lord would have me do?
Ratings, source of doctrine or information, and who else has seen the movie, whither in importance. The decision is strictly yours, and no one else.
I am sure that the Savior has a vivid recollection of history, has an appreciation for patriotism, sacrifice, artistic expression, sexuality and many other topics. Since we will have the opportunity to review our choices with him some day anyway, perhaps we should include him and his standards in our decision making process now
I grew up (In the church) watching R-rated movies and honestly didn't think it was all that bad. Now that I'm grown up, I'm a bit wiser. My wife and I decided to do what the prophets have told us to do, imagine that, and for more than 12 years now we have not watch any - other than the edited for TV versions. It was really hard at first but after a year or two it is now second nature.
I was raised in the church, and my dad always would go to an R-movie on and off. Then us kids learned in Young men and young woman that we shouldn't. We even tried to get my dad to not go. I don't think it really changed. For my whole life I have not watched R-movies. Then the edited one started to come out and I started to watch/buy those DVD's.
The other side of it, is the rated M video games. I can't say I make a habit of buying/renting those types of games, but if there is a game I want, I don't really worry about the Rating. I do think there is at least a little different of a video game seeing the blood vs watching a movie that looks more real. But I know its still not the best.
