Former News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks was arrested Sunday in connection with British police investigations into phone hacking and police bribery, her spokesman told CNN.

Brooks on Friday resigned from her post as chief executive at News International, the British arm of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.

Murdoch closed News of the World last week, less than a week after it came out that reporters working for him had illegally eavesdropped on the phone of a missing girl, Milly Dowler, and deleted some of her messages to make room for more. She was later found dead.

Murdoch, his son, James, and Brooks are to appear before British politicians Tuesday to answer questions over the phone hacking scandal.

Some of the claims Brooks faces relate to the News of the World's alleged hacking, while she was editor, into Dowler's mobile phone account. Ref. CNN

The British police officer who ruled two years ago that there was no reason to reopen an investigation into phone hacking by journalists resigned Monday, the Metropolitan Police announced.

Assistant Commissioner John Yates - who has since called his decision on the probe "crap" - is the second top member of London police to resign over the scandal plaguing Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Paul Stephenson quit Sunday.

Stephenson stressed that he had behaved ethically, but said he decided to resign because increased scrutiny connected to the case would burden his department and detract from its accomplishments. Ref. CNN

Rupert Murdoch said he is not ultimately responsible for "this fiasco," referring to the ever-widening phone-hacking scandal clouding the operations of News Corp. He blamed "the people I trusted and the people they trusted."

Murdoch and his son James have been answering questions from a committee of British Parliament for almost an hour. Most of the questions have focused on their knowledge of the scandal. In answering the lawmakers, the elder Murdoch has taken long pauses, asked for questions to be repeated and admitted he didn't recognize the names of some people who had worked for him for decades.

Media magnate Rupert Murdoch was attacked by a man apparently carrying a plate full of shaving foam during a parliamentary hearing Tuesday, but returned unhurt. The man could be heard telling Murdoch he's "a greedy billionaire."

Murdoch's wife, Wendi Deng, who was seated behind him, leaped to her feet and smashed the attacker's hand with her own, pictures from the scene showed.

Murdoch was hit full in the face, and stunned but not injured, CNN saw.

The hearing into phone hacking was suspended for a few minutes only.

The attacker appears to be in his late 20s or early 30s. A policeman wrestled him away but the attack was already complete by then. Police arrested him and were later seen wiping foam off his face. Ref. CNN
