This is my first post to this site & I somehow suspect that it won't be my last. I've been enlightened by the info I have read on this thread. I'm relieved to know, if the research can be believed, that originally, the celebration that has become 'Halloween', was in fact something positive. That being the case, then why argue about what has happened since. Surely, putting this to the dissenters, should silence most, shouldn't it? Maybe not, but anyway, moving right along.... I think I'm with Hyperwrx in many of his submissions. I suspect he has the support of many LDS - active or less active - around the world, who may or may not be in a quandary over whether or not to celebrate Halloween. I realise this thread is not about whether or not to celebrate, but rather should the church sponsor such an activity.
I think that if approved by the local leaders as just another ward activity, whether under the guise of a Fall Festival (We here in New Zealand are heading into summer of course, so we'll have to call it a Spring Festival or something), or any other name, why shouldn't the church sponsor it? All the reasons and the history for having 'trunk 'n' treat' on church property as opposed to street 'trick or treating' have been well discussed already, (so I won't go into that again), and I must admit, that here in our ward over the years, we have had wonderful, fun-filled activities in the name of 'Halloween' with absolutely no negatives. Auxiliaries have been given various assignments - games, food, decorating their trunks (or "car boots" as they are referred to here), providing candy (lollies), non-scary videos for the children & grandparents, etc etc - so it hasn't been just kids lining up for lollies or goodies they haven't really 'earned'. It's been great fun, but I think as leaders come & go, so will the attitude to continuing this celebration, and, after all's said and done, it will ultimately be their call. For this year, we'll be enjoying another evening of fun & games, so we'll enjoy it while it lasts!

Sharing the Book of Mormon on Halloween Last Halloween, members of the Redlands Second Ward Mutual in the San Bernardino California Stake were busy making cookies and marking scriptures instead of sewing costumes and painting faces. Their efforts culminated in a "trick or treat in reverse" the evening of October 27, their regular Mutual night, when they treated 27 nonmember families to homemade cookies and a Book of Mormon. The ward seventies group leader and the young people themselves decided who to visit. The youth were then divided into groups of six, with one representative from each Mutual class in each group. After presenting the families with the Book of Mormon and the cookies, they asked them: "Do you have any questions for us? Representatives of our church would like to stop by in a few days and see what you think of the message of the book. Would that be all right with you?" A week after the event, a list of 18 families who had been visited was turned over to the seventies quorum. These families have been contacted by stake and full-time missionaries for teaching possibilities, and families in the ward are fellowshipping the contacts. At least one girl who was visited that evening has been baptized. The spirit of the evening was summed up by Mia Maid Rachel Hansen, who said: "We who were giving and those friends who were receiving felt a special closeness. It was a beautiful experience to see one of our nonmember friends feel the joy of accepting the gospel." |
We had our Halloween Party last Thursday we had dinner and then trunk or treat walk around. The great thing about this was the fact that many inactive and nonmembers show up to this event and it is a great community building activity.
