I have a book called Gethsemane. It is written by Andrew Skinner, who is the Dean of Religious Education at BYU. The book is based on a talk which he gave at Education week about 2 years ago, which is an excellent talk, by the way.
Anyway, here is what he has to say about this issue, which is consistent with what I have always been taught:
The atonement was not only for this world, but it was fall all the worlds created by the Savior under the direction of the Father. According to Moses 7:30, this is worlds without number. Also, D&C 76:24 makes reference to multiple worlds created by the Savior.
From Encyclopedia of Mormonism:
Latter-day Saint prophets and scripture tech that other worlds similar to this earth have been and will be created and inhabited in fulfillment of God's eternal designs for his children.
There are many other scriptures which attest to this: Moses 1:33-35; Hebrews 1:2; Abraham 3:12.
Mormons accept the existence of other worlds created by God for a divine purpose "to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" (Moses 1:39). The people on these other worlds are children of God created in his image, just as we are. (Moses 1:33; D&C 76:24).
The means of salvation through the gospel of Jesus Christ is the same for all of God's creations. When we say that the atonement was universal, we mean universal for ALL of God's creations.
Back to the talk/book by Andrew Skinner. He mentions that in the book of Revelations John sees many different types of beasts worshipping the savior. He hypothesizes that these beasts, many of which we don't recognize and neigther did John as being from this world, possibly came from other worlds, others of God's creation.
Yes, Jesus' atonement covers all these other worlds, just as it covers ours.
LDS Forever, you raise great questions...THX! =)
Just for the sake of discussion, I reference below some of the comments made by Elder Neal A. Maxwell, during the special broadcast between General Conference Sessions in April 2000 (also in the video, "Special Witnesses of Christ"):
Elder Neal A. Maxwell
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
...We can "in awesome wonder consider all the worlds [God's] hands have made "¦ [and see God's] pow"r thru-out the universe displayed" ("How Great Thou Art," Hymns, no. 86)....
...By viewing the stretching cosmos, we can humbly contemplate the vastness of divine handiwork. Long before He was born at Bethlehem...Christ was the Lord of the universe, who created worlds without number-of which ours is only one (see Eph. 3:9; Heb. 1:2).
How many planets are there in the universe with people on them? We don't know, but we are not alone in the universe! God is not the God of only one planet!
I testify that Jesus is truly the Lord of the universe, 'that by [Christ], and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God" (D&C 76:24)....
Another addendum (so I can get up to 30 posts and do private messaging! =)):
"Earths...are continually coming into existence, and undergoing changes and passing through the same experiences that we are passing through. Sin is upon every earth that ever was created....and every earth, and the people thereof, in their turn and time, receive all that we receive, and pass through all the ordeals that we are passing through" (Brigham Young, July 10, 1870, Journal of Discourses 14:71)....Thoughts/comments?
And yet another addendum:
"The time will come when we will...go out into the great eternities. And we will be able to produce great families of spirit children who in turn may return to that planeet which you will have organized and will have made habitable. And those children be permitted to go to those planets or earths, and there they will receive mortal bodies to have their school process so that eventually they also can return to their Heavenly Father" (Spencer W. Kimball in "The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball (Edward L. Kimball, ed), SLC, Bookcraft, 1982, p.53)....
Mormonboy, great quotes!!!! the first one gives exactly an answer for my question
" How many planets are there in the universe with people on them? We don't know, but we are not alone in the universe! God is not the God of only one planet!
I testify that Jesus is truly the Lord of the universe..."
Thanks
