Privacy, the freedom to live one's life away from prying eyes, is a fundamental human right enshrined within international law. However, its integrity is under threat by the developments of increasingly sophisticated systems of state surveillance. Privacy International, a global privacy advocacy group, recently released a report categorizing Russia, along with China, Malaysia, Singapore and the United Kingdom as an 'endemic surveillance society' and one of the countries least able to defend individual privacy.
