I have been pondering the differences in the degrees of glory as put forth in section 76 of the doctrine and covenants. There are different opinions on progression after this life, even between general authorities. Are there any conclusive statements from prophets or apostles regarding progression within kingdoms? Is it possible to progress from the terrestrial to the celestial kingdom after this life? Can everyone progress eventually to the Celestial? I dont think that is the case, but I'd like to get any references on this topic from general authorities.

Eternal life, or life with God, is our goal. It is a great blessing to know that we can have an eternal family and eternal progression, with continuing opportunity and challenge. |
I think that we are capable of progressing within the kingdoms but not to a higher kingdom. There might be the possibility of degression? We do have the tendency to backslide and not necessarily progress due to sin. Whether or not that will put us in a lower kingdom I do not know. I wouldn't necessarily put this on God either from the standpoint that we probably lack the ability to progress to a higher kingdom. I think Jesus will be able to take one look at us and know our nature and put us in the right kingdom. You all know how hard it is to fight your own nature. God has always been more than fair so his will be done.
According to Elder Bruce R McConkie in his talk Seven Deadly Heresies
QUOTE |
Heresy five: There are those who say that there is progression from one kingdom to another in the eternal worlds or that lower kingdoms eventually progress to where higher kingdoms once were. This belief lulls men into a state of carnal security. It causes them to say, "God is so merciful; surely he will save us all eventually; if we do not gain the celestial kingdom now, eventually we will; so why worry?" ....They neither progress from one kingdom to another, nor does a lower kingdom ever get where a higher kingdom once was. Whatever eternal progression there is, it is within a sphere. |
