If I were an LDS Actor - Page 2

Title: Hard answer to give

Comments: Honestly, for me, it would depend less on the profanity than the overall message of the film. I like the example of Schindler's List. It's definitely rated R, but that doesn't make it bad. The question for me is "does the end justify the means?" Is the story worth all of that profanity? If the answer is yes, then I would. If the answer is no, I wouldn't.

Questions like this are so tricky because the area is so grey, but I just read a really good paper on this issue called "Morality or Empathy" by Ronald Wilcox. You can find it online. I really like the points he brings up.

A few years ago, I might have said that the answer to this question would be to turn the part down. And no, I'm not losing my faith in the church. I'm actually an English major at BYU, and a lot of the material I've read and analyzed deals with some very serious and adult material. But my teachers have always warned us in advance and would let us read something else if it was too uncomfortable. I have found that there can be a lot of "good" beneath an exterior of what we see as "bad."

In the end though, I think the decision applies differently to each person. The most important thing for me is that I'm comfortable with my decision. If you're not comfortable with what you would be doing on stage, then I'd say don't go for it.

Just as a side-note to my comment (which is kind of long. I can be long-winded at times), would this still be a difficult thing for me to do? Probably, but mostly because I know my family would want to watch it (be it a play or a film). It runs counter to LDS culture to stand up in front of your parents and swear. I don't think my family would like it so much, but if I believed the end justified the means, that would give me the backbone to do it.
