I remember reading in an article that the author felt that the Holy Ghost was an office. It was always a spirit, a being of spirit matter, not a physical body. At different times, it was a different intelligence, for different people. He has taken the form of a dove, and is said to reside within us if we are righteous and keep the covenants we make with our Heavenly Father.
The Holy Ghost could be a family member that has passed beyond the veil and is trying to steer you in the right direction so that you may make certain decisions. Keeping in mind that spirits cannot have control over us with physical bodies.
It wasn't exactly doctrine, just insight.
It was on an old website, kind of like a blog, ran by an older man where he would write his thoughts. The website is long since discontinued but I recently came across his email and talked to him, asking if I could get a copy of the site or references. He replied that I could obtain a copy, but I would have to purchase it off the internet for some fee. I didn't have any money at the time so I couldn't.
I like to think of the organization of the church. The church extends into the spirit world and the rest of the universe as well. We have a presidency. Three people who have distinguished themselves to a higher extent. I like to think of Heavenly Father as the head, with his son, Jesus Christ, who helped him create worlds without number; and finally, the Holy Ghost, who guides and directs us and resides within us. The HG is definitely a spirit, a guardian angel if you will. Someone who is elected to the office of Holy Ghost to steer you in the right direction once, twice, or maybe even a million times. I'm referring to a website I visited awhile back. It has since been discontinued, but it had millions of references about doctrine. He was supposedly traced the Sword of Laban from Laban, Nephi, Goliath, and Moroni, saying all of these men held a sword of fine craftmanship and saying the sword held magical properties that allowed the bearer to lead mass armies.
I guess its just my opinion.
Sounds like your opinion. I have seen many refer to the Holy Ghost's position as an office but it is as speculative as many other things we have been told. Just because its on a web site does not make it true or doctrinal. I always like to see a quote from the scriptures or some LDS book.

Comments: From what I have read in a talk by Robert L. Millet...you can't prove that Adam has been resurrected, he may have chosen to stay to do the work he needs to do as a disembodied spirit.
