If they did why are questions still being asked about it. This is actually one of the more common questions I hear in a quorum or class on Sunday, when does the spirit actually enter the body. In the early days of the church Joseph Smith inquired of the Lord many things, why can't it be done likewise now.

I believe it is irrelevant when the spirit enters the body. Whether the spirit enters the body at conception, at birth, or somewhere in between has no impact on the immorality of abortion at any stage of fetal development by my estimation. The Lord has stated, "Thou shalt not commit murder, nor anything like unto it." If you aren't content with the information provided by church leadership, perhaps it would be beneficial to approach the Lord in prayer on the matter. This has worked for me in the past when I have had doubts or concerns with certain teachings or practices.
