So, if God created meat for those who believe and know the truth, would it be wrong not to eat it? I think that may be going to far. What do you guys think?

I do not think it is wrong. Take the example of Adam and Eve in Genesis (they did not eat meat while in the Garden of Eden) add to that the many quotes from Prophets and early leaders within this same thread and you can form an opinion on how meat should be used.

Rather off topic, but...

I tend to lean towards the idea that unless there is a medical reason to be obese that perhaps it would be good to do this.

First, I do not think the Church would never do this. (We had/have a couple of Apostles and General Authorities pretty "chubby") Second, can you imagine how complicated would be to find out individual cases of whether there is a medical condition or is simply a lack of self mastery? I think the right approach in my opinion should be to emphasize the point about not only eating meat sparingly but the importance of healthy weight and healthy food. Some years ago, the manuals of Relief Society used to touch topics like this on detail, but not anymore.

The problem we face is that many members feel "restrained" but what they consider cannot do in the Church (drink, smoke, etc) so they indulge freely in food. Also, we have several members with deep self esteem issues who "medicate" themselves with food to fill empty spaces in their hearts and Spirit.

Thank you for the source! I was also thinking of the Aaronic priesthood and how they were commanded to partake of the meat of the animals sacrificed before the Lord.

Unfortunantely, what you say about fat members is true. I doubt the Church would restrain obese members the way they might someone who srank beer. However, this does open up the problem of examples. When I attended high school in the late '70s there was one high ranking LDS teacher who was so overweight that some students nicknamed him "grunt" rather than his real name and others nicknamed him "battlestar". I had just joined the Church and one of the questions posed to me was how can someone be following LDS health codes but punish their body in such a way?

Also, what does eating meat have to do with keeping fit? I eat meat and my doctor said that my cardivascular health was in the top 10%. Meat is quite essential to healthy living unless you are so into making your life complicated that you have to measure every food you eat to make sure you are getting the proper amount of protein combinations from non-animal sources.

Also, I was watching a program on the Lewis and Clark expidention on PBS a while back. They listed how many fish, dogs, buffalo and other animals their small party would go through in a day. I suspect that most members today DO eat sparingly their sources of meat when compared to what was normal in the early portion of the 19th. Century. Why feel guilty then? If you want to be healthy follow the WofW, exercise, be involved with people socially, have lots of sex with your spouse have a big family, go to church often and don't hold grudges. This will maintain your health and prolong your longevity.

The problem is the amount and type of meat. Certain meats are full of fat and bacteria (all meats have bacteria) making them unhealthy foods. Large amounts of meat causes problems with the heart and other diseases just like obesity or do you think people who are extremely overweight just eat salads and fruits? wink.gif

Bacteria is no problem if you cook the meat. Besides, your intestines are full of bacteria and without them humans could not digest food.

The problem with obesity is that people today eat more than they exercise off. We are designed to overeat -- our body's are stupid, they perceive lack of food as famine and so when food is present we are designed to eat as much as possible. Problem is, you can get the equivalent of a kill or a find of a stash of food every day you open the refrigerator. So people eat and pack on the weight.

Exercise is the answer. Again, we are designed to move, not sit in front of a computer screen or TV. Personally, I believe that another problem with modern-day obesity is small families where parents can afford to indulge their little butterballs in all the fast food and junk food their kid wants. I have seven kids and can assure you that when junk food is in the house it gets divided up into smaller portions as opposed to when I was a kid (raised an only child) all I had to do was ask and mom would shower me with all the chips or ice cream I wanted.

That's a myth, bacteria does not totally die when you cook it, if that was the case people would not be constantly sick by not only food poisoning but by salmonella. What about when you go out?

I was a vegetarian for a year and never felt so much energy in my life! I am considering to do it again right now.

I strongly disagree with this statement. Our bodies ARE intelligent and they have not been designed by Father to overeat. The feeling of "hunger" people feel if they skip breakfast or lunch is not hunger but food stimulation.

I agree that exercising is a very important part.

A very nice quote by President Benson:

QUOTE
To a great extent we are physically what we eat. Most of us are acquainted with some of the prohibitions, such as no tea, coffee, tobacco, or alcohol.  What needs additional emphasis are the positive aspects--the need for vegetables, fruits, and grains, particularly wheat.

In most cases, the closer these can be, when eaten, to their natural state--without over refinement and processing--the healthier we will be. To a significant degree, we are an overfed and undernourished nation digging an early grave with our teeth, and lacking the energy that could be ours because we overindulge in junk foods.

I am grateful to know that on the Brigham Young University campus you can get apples from vending machines, that you have in your student center a fine salad bar, and that you produce an excellent loaf of natural whole-grain bread. Keep it up and keep progressing in that direction. We need a generation of young people who, as Daniel, eat in a more healthy manner than to fare on the "king's meat"--and whose countenances show it (see Daniel 1) Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p. 476-7, from "In His Steps," BYU Devotional 1979

Now here is something interesting. Below is an excellent documentary on obesity in the USA. Did you know that children whose parents restrict their access to junk food wind up with fatter kids?
