Yes, I understand the picture you are painting, but I really believe that when a person reaches the kind of size and weight that you described with those Relief Society Sisters then you are talking about a psychological problem offset by an initial choice.
Yes, food can be harmful, and food in itself is a drug. What happens most times is people medicate themselves with food to the point that it drowns out their sorrow or alternate needs - it is a problem that is trying to be resolved through a natural occurrence - eating.
Like I said, I do not think they lose the Spirit or using your terminology are "not in tune", because of being fat - this will need to be handled on a case by case basis, BUT I do agree that they are definitely MISSING out on a lot of things and more especially those things that the Lord may yet have in store for them. Even in the example you gave the Sister has reached the stage where it is now a medical condition for which she may really need to food to satisfy something with her in order to go through with the Home Making. Is that effective? No, definitely not, is she not in tune with the Spirit? That is hard to say, you can be in tune, but just not able to act properly on what you are tunning into.
It is like this... you can tune into a radio station that says call in now and win $1,000, but your phone is not working because you did not pay the bill, so you miss out. Yes, you are tuned in, but you have made it so that you cannot reap the rewards had you paid the bill. I believe food addiction is like this... they are just missing out on more blessings, but not less of the Spirit per se.
Okay, just a question. I spent the afternoon shopping with a young woman who is not LDS. She asked me why LDS people were against drinking tea but at the same time it is rare for LDS leaders to speak out against poor eating and exercise habits (have to admit that I have heard some like when Elder faust said that keeping one's health up ranked higher in the priorities than atttending church meetings or when Spencer W. Kimble suggested that single sisters searching for a husband should take better care of themselves and lose some weight).
So I am going to spend some more time with this woman in the near future. The question is bound to come up in our conversations. How should I answer her?
Spencer W Kimblel really said that Wow! You can tell this sister that our womens group has changed (Relief Society) its strategy instead of one meeting per month we have various activities instead. This was done by the presidency to cover all the needs or learning experiences for the sisters, for example, my ward has an exercising class that meets twice a week in the church building. You can also tell her what Elder Faust and Spencer W.Kimble said. I once also had a relief society president that taught yoga to us.
We are addressing health issues in the church all the time.
I do believe that for some people who are overweight. That these people are missing something in their life or trying to get over a problem from their past. Food somehow eases the pain. This is where I think they need to address why they eat so much.. If this problem is not addressed they continue to loose a little bit of there spirituality.

Name: Lia
Comments: It was somewhat comforting to see this post regarding obesity and the word of wisdom. I have been considering coming back to the church, however yesterday was taken a back by a member who considers herself worthy for the Temple. I felt chastised to hear her opinion of my place in heaven, considering what I am and am not doing in accordance to the word of wisdom. I felt chastised because these words were coming from a woman who has never taken care of her body when it comes to diet and exercise. At this time, she has become twice the size of me. I have seen this way too often. This judgment emanating for temple card holders, who are living the word of wisdom, yet not really. Over indulgence in any form is a form of impurity and distorts the spirit.
I, in consequence, will not be returning to the church. There are too many double standards, too much self righteousness from less than a righteous people, too much pride within them, to desire to be among them.
Thanks for the opportunity to be honest.

Whoa... Careful, McKay. You have never had this woman's experiences. You may have had similar ones to what she is describing, and I think many here have, though not all concerning the Word of Wisdom, but not one of us knows what all of her experiences are.

Members cannot "be commanded in all things". My mother used this rationale 50 years ago! Yes, people do pollute their bodies with too much meat, sugar, fast food, etc. And not exercise enough, but that is their right to the law of agency we fought so valiantly for in the pre-mortal world. It's called Choice and Accountability. We can wreck our bodies with all sorts of things - including legal drugs - and face the consequence of poor health, chronic conditions, and/or early death due to our decisions.
Temple recommend interviews only cover the 5 don'ts; Alcohol, Tobacco, Tea, Coffee, and Illegal Drugs. Coke, Pepsi, etc. Do not fall into this category although we have been counseled against them by the General Authorities. Excessive food consumption and other indulgences are harmful yes, but not for denying a recommend.
Remember, we only need to look for the beam in our own eye, and not the mote in our neighbors. To judge others steps over the bounds of the Lord's instruction to us.
