Just being fat and being morbidly obese is two big stages the way I see it. Anyone could have some extra pounds, but when your morbidly obese I don't think you need any scripture or even a visit from the angel Moroni to tell you something is wrong here.
Hi Suzie Sue,
You have a good argument and I agree with you to a point...however, Willard Richards (an early church leader) weighed over 300 pounds! I don't think Brigham Young (also described as "portly") would have refused one of the Apostles a recommend based on his build.
One thing I know for certain...the older you get the harder it is to keep the weight off. Even with rigorous workouts and strict diet, it's tough to look twenty at age sixty! Nature fights HARD to pull everything south (my wife is an exception).
I have to confess that sometimes I am a hypocrite. Just tonight I ate three cookies and a glass of milk. Sinning YES, but boy it tasted good! I'll try to work it off tomorrow...

One thing most LDS members get caught up in is the letter of the law. The word of wisdom, doesn't mention a lot of things, but we know them to be bad, like abusing prescription meds. What christ always tried to teach people is that we are living under a higher law. You need to actually think for yourself and live by the spirit of the law. That what the Jews kept doing was living under the Aaronic priesthood and its laws. The Melchizedek priesthood is the higher law. That's why, outside the temple, there are no prayers or blessings that are word for word that you need the higher priesthood to perform.
The interesting thing about this aspect of health and the Word of Wisdom is that it shows. You might be able to hide the drinking, or the smokes, but once you reach a certain stage of weight it can no longer be hidden.
