Epidurals In Trinidad

I am three months pregnant and after experiencing 21 hours of labor with my last child, I decided I want an Epidural. My first son was born in the US and I had something similar to an Epidural called a Spinal Block. It is almost the same, with the difference that it is done in one single application and the Epidural is constant. There was a HUGE difference between the two pregnancies (one with an Epidural and the last one without). I thought I was literally passing out in the delivery room.

Anyhow, I am interested if any of you have had an Epidural here in Trinidad, how common it is (based on my conversation with other women does not seem to be a common thing) and how was your overall experience. Maybe you know someone who had one and you can tell me how everything went.

Trinidad Epidurals

My sister had an epidural and I had a spinal.
My sister's experience according to her was that the epidural was pure heaven. She felt peace from the pain as soon as she received the epidural and was able to be awake and enjoy the birth of her son.
I had a spinal. It was the same for me. I however was scheduled for a section therefore I did not go through labour.
I felt no pain and bonded with my son earlier than with a general anesthetic.

Kaisofan, thanks for answering. May I ask where did your sister and you have your babies? Do you know if there is a difference in price between an Epidural and a Spinal? Did both of you have a C-section? I will mostly go through a normal birth.

She at the Port of Spain General Hospital, me at Amicus Maternity Clinic in La Puerta Road, Diego Martin.
Both of us had great experiences. I went to Amicus because my doctor does not practise at the hospital but was willing to use the maternity clinic. In addition, they are very responsive to the individual's requests and take the mother's views seriously.

Interesting. I did not know a person can get Epidurals in a public hospital here or is it because you all had C-sections and is a normal procedure? I assume she had to pay for it? I am having my baby at the same nursing home I had my last one in St. Augustine, hearing the news and the horror stories of Mt. Hope is truly scary.

Over my dead body JB. Don't you see the news, hear the horror stories? Public Hospitals in Trinidad are in a very bad shape. I do not think is safe to have a baby there at all considering all the risks. It literally breaks my heart when I hear these stories from people I personally know. So, if I can have my baby in a nursing home where I feel somewhat a little more safe, then that's what I will do. I know is a matter of personal experiences, but seeing first hand how Mt Hope and POS General Hospital are inside, no thank you.

Now with regards to the epidurals, I would love to know more about how is given in public hospitals since the drug itself is very expensive and I do not see it being used for every patient that request it.
